Greetings dear friends of the Hive platform in general, you are all welcome once again to my blog dedicated to the study of the great diversity of arthropods present on our planet.in this writing I will show the characteristics, behavior and other relevant aspects about a dipteran of the family Stratiomyidae, so I invite you to read the following article to feed the knowledge.

Diptera are one of the most recognized groups of arthropods worldwide, they are organisms belonging to the class insecta that are characterized by having a single pair of developed wings, an aspect that differs somewhat with the rest of winged insects by the fact that generally these living hexapods have 2 pairs of wings. Members of the order Diptera are widely distributed in all corners of our planet, and have a negative reputation thanks to the various diseases they can transmit due to their feeding habits and the lifestyles they have adopted to survive in terrestrial ecosystems.

These insects are usually a source of food for a wide variety of living beings, both vertebrates and invertebrates, in addition to the above, these insect species are biological controllers and also contribute to the degradation of decomposing organic matter, so they are often vectors of a wide variety of pathogenic organisms potentially harmful to humans.

Diptera libro english.png

Within the order Diptera is a striking family known scientifically as Stratiomyidae, this type of invertebrates are commonly called "soldier flies" and are characterized by being morphologically very similar to certain hymenopterans such as wasps or bees. Being insects that do not possess a reliable defense mechanism, thanks to years of evolution they have developed a remarkable resemblance to certain flying arthropods equipped with stingers in order to repel their predators, this aspect has served to ensure their survival in the hostility of their environment.

Among the more than 2,000 species that make up the Stratiomyidae family is the genus Hermetia, which is composed of an estimated 60 species. The species of this genus generally live in humid places, although their high presence in certain areas is due to the presence of animal and vegetable waste, which they need as a source of food and to be able to carry out their biological cycle correctly.

The male specimens are very similar to the females, for this reason it is difficult to determine the sex at a glance, however, if several agglomerates are found in the same area, it is possible to compare and therefore know exactly the gender of each one, since the male is much smaller than the female.

Diptera 2.png

The species studied and shown in this article corresponds to a Hermetia illucens, this dipteran is commonly known as "black soldier fly". This insect is widely reproduced to use its larvae as food for certain pets, it is not poisonous and does not represent a direct danger to humans; however, these organisms frequent animal excrement, so they can reach our homes and be vectors of microorganisms that can seriously affect us at the stomach level.

The biological cycle of this diptera is relatively fast, the female usually lays her eggs near a reliable food source for her larvae, after 4 days they hatch and feed non-stop for about 2 weeks, then the larvae prepare to start a new phase in their life, so by making an internal pupa, they transform into an adult specimen thanks to the metamorphosis process in a few days.

While this insect is in the larva and pupa stage, they become easy food for many living beings, this is clearly due to the fact that they have no defense mechanisms and their low mobility.

Diptera partes 1 ingles.png

The following image shows each of the divisions (tagma) that divide the body of this invertebrate. The resemblance to insects of the order Hymenoptera is striking, but once it is observed in detail it is easily distinguished that it is a dipteran, especially by the shape of its head and compound eyes.

Diptera f 3.png

The Hermetia illucens species has remarkable vision thanks to its developed compound eyes, which allows it to have a better perspective of its surroundings and to be alert to possible predators. At the same time, they have an anatomy and morphology that allows them to react quickly to dangers, for this reason it is really difficult to capture or eliminate this type of insects, like other types of flies.

Diptera alas.png

As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, diptera have only one pair of wings, since the hind wings are not developed in these insects, on the contrary, these wings are modified and transformed into structures composed of a series of small organs that help the insect to give direction to the flight in an optimal way, this small pair of wings are called halteres, and it is for this reason that most members of the order Diptera are considered as excellent flying organisms.

Diptera f 44.png

Another striking aspect is its antennae, these sensory organs are usually in constant movement in this insect, the movements used by the insect in its antennae are vertical and continuous, so that while one antenna is directed downwards the other goes upwards.

This type of arthropod has one of the best olfactory systems within the phylum Arthropoda. It has sensory organs in various parts of its body, but the main ones are in its legs, which is why they are constantly rubbing them to keep them clean and to be able to find new food sources in their environment.
