What does the outer space looks like? 7 Oddities You Should Know

avatar

Several individuals are mired in confusion about what exists beyond earth. Our universe and beyond sometimes keep even the greatest of scientists at sixes and sevens. What thought harnesses your mind when you give the sky a long deep stare? What lives there other than the sun, moon, and stars? Is there another world beyond ours? Is it beautiful?

With so many oddities and misconceptions about outer space, there are enough questions in our minds to last a lifetime. Thanks to astronomy and space research which gives us the room to satisfy our inquisitiveness about everything in the universe that exists beyond the earth's atmosphere. In this article, you will discover (without a telescope) seven things about outer space you might or might have not discovered yet, so next time you think about outer space, you will not just ask what lies there, but also paint stunning pictures of what lies there in your head.

SILENCE

Whenever earth is silent, outer space just borrows some silence. Lol. Space is completely silent. Wondering how? Let me fill you in. You see, sound waves require a medium of propagation. In order words, for sound waves to travel, they need something, a medium to travel through. Since space lacks atmosphere in its vacuum, it gives sound no room to travel. Hence, space will always be eerily silent. So the earth is noisy because it has the atmosphere and air that enable sound waves to travel.

CENTURIES–OLD ASTRONAUTS FOOTPRINTS ON THE MOON

"How is this even possible?" I just read your mind, didn't I? Basically, the moon has no atmosphere so the wind is missing in action. Also, there is no water to wash off the footprints of astronauts who have visited. So, roverprints, spaceship prints, and even discarded items will remain on the moon, presented and untouched for donkey years, but not forever. At some point, since the moon is a dynamic environment, it is being frequently inundated with "micrometeorites". This simply means erosion happens on the moon. It just happens at a snail's pace.

ICE PLANET ON FIRE

This is one of the coolest things in outer space. An awe-inspiring exoplanet with a sprinkle of paradox. I'm bewildered at the thought of what this feat looks like. A blend of fire and ice with no one consuming the other. Strange and astonishing I must say. It's the Gliese 436b.

The surface is a fiery burning 822 degrees Fahrenheit, but with an icy landscape that remains frozen as a result of the gravitational force exercised by the planet's core.

The force helps the ice stay denser than the one we have here on earth and is assumed to hold back any water vapor that seeks to evaporate.

OVER 40 HABITABLE EARTH-LIKE PLANETS

Astronomers have drawn a conclusion that outer space is home to over 40 planets after identifying some Earth-like planets that have favorable conditions that could possibly support alien life. One of the most recent and intriguing discoveries was found in 2017 when the European Southern Observatory noticed Ross-128b, an exoplanet 11 light-years away from us, that is about 106.7trillion kilometers away! An entire year on the planet lasts only about 10 days and is thought to possess a rocky landscape and climate that could allow water to exist on its surface.

100 MIRRORS ON THE MOON

After astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin accomplished their 1969 Apollo mission, they left behind on the lunar surface 100 mirrors. I know you didn't know until now. Well, you're not alone. This is one of the interesting things in outer space most people don't know of. It is also the only running experiment from the Apollo mission to date.

The space runners placed a 2-foot-wide panel draped in 100 mirrors on the surface of the moon. Ever since the fascinating souvenir has been of great help to today's astronomers. They still use the panel of mirrors to calculate the distance from the moon to the earth by reflecting laser pulses on it.

A WATERY CLOUD WITH 140 TRILLION TIMES EARTH'S WATER

There is absolutely nowhere else in the universe with more water than the APM 08279+5255 quasar, according to astronomers' discoveries. Quasars are very small matters with a star-like appearance and amazing luminosity. They are thought to be powered by colossal black holes. This particular 08279+5255 quasar has a black hole edged by a vapor cloud that holds 140 trillion times Earth's water. Supermassive!

THE PLANET THAT RAINS RAZOR-SHARP GLASS

We've heard a couple of terrifying stories of what the universe would be like in the last days. Some say it would rain fire, UFOs and Aliens would dominate, and other frightening, hair-raising, and toe-curling stories. Well, it appears astronomers have discovered a planet with last day's features.

It has a brutal atmosphere totally unsafe for anything that has breath with a pretty deceptive blue hue of exoplanet HD 189733 that conceals the planet's brutal environment. It rains razor-sharp glass that would pierce into the toughest of skin and hardest of rocks– a condition that no being will survive under.

According to NASA, if you were to walk on the surface of this planet, you'd be vulnerable to winds of up to 5,400 mph and that is about seven times the speed of sound. How striking!

ON A FINAL NOTE

Outer space is indeed a world packed with fascinating elements that might never cross anyone's imaginations except they must have read or heard about them. It turns out there is so much to explore in outer space. It is a whole new world completely different from what we are accustomed to. A world that is home to tons of cool things we never thought would exist.

Although we might not get to know all that our expanding and intentionally infinite universe comprises, Many special oddities exist beyond the earth. Astronomers are still making discoveries. Study, research, and discovery will always quench our thirst to discover and explore the downright outer space without needing a telescope or even leaving Earth.
