Auctioning off Market Friday

avatar
(Edited)

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise! That is me!) I know, I am finally early, sort of, but I am in transit from vacation to real life. So, post earlier than normal or on time. It's that kind of week.

I hope you will join us as we share the different markets. It has been such a pleasure to see markets from all over the world. Who doesn't love to see what they are selling? There is always a curiosity attached to foreign ingredients, different produce or any product sold. So, yes! I would love to see yours! So don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery, art galleries, wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Don't forget to use the community tag #hive-196308 or hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle. I know, so many are confused by how/when to use these tags. If you use a community tag, it must be posted first. (the hive tag)

Please leave the link to your post here so it can easily be found by others. They will all be in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you! ❤

So, I am just getting back from vacation and already looking forward to the weekend. You know I can't stay away! I miss you! Plus, someone let steem slip while I was gone! We need to hoist it up again!

Last market, I had a post about the ship I was on, showing off some of the different things they have on board. One of the things that I enjoy going to is their art gallery. Not so much to buy, but I love to look! A variety of artists are shown off and several art auctions are held, usually on sea days when they have a captive audience. A sea day is a day where you sail, but do not stop at any port, so you are on board all day. I find it very relaxing to just lay by the pool and drink something with a little paper umbrella, but, that is just me.

So, grab a bid card, find a chair and let's peruse this auction, to see what we can see. Signal the waiter with your hand and he will bring us some champagne. We can't bid properly without a little bit of bubbly, right? Let's take a walk through to check out what they will be showing today.

Marco.jpg

I spied a Marko Markovich. He is an America born in California and his parents moved back to their native Croatia while he was still a young boy. He is a self-taught artist and I love how he captures the light in his paintings. I have personally watched him paint at one of the Galleries he deals with. It is quite captivating to watch an artist at work.

20180308_114445.jpg

Ah! She is surrounded by a few Itzchak Tarkay. He is an Isreali artist and I do love some of his works. He is always a good seller at these events, probably because he has died within the last five or six years. We all know he won't be painting anymore, so everyone wants a piece of him. What they don't realize is that these are not oils, but lithographs that are embellished and that they will be pumping those out as fast as the printing machine can.

You can't replace his watercolors.

ilyaya.jpg

Slava Ilyayev paints with a palette knife. I was mesmerized by this ability. He never uses a brush. This scene here is probably what he is best known for. Central Park in the fall with a couple walking. You will see all different versions of it, but they are always very showy if you like the heavy-handed palette painting. :)

20180308_115707.jpg

Various artists are shown here, the one in particular who catches my eye is an up and coming (as far as this gallery is concerned) is the one of the blue horse - because, like a unicorn, who doesn't want a blue horse??

Autumn de Forest will be 18 this year but has been painting for years. This child prodigy is blossoming right before my very eyes.

Autumn de Forest is an American painter from Las Vegas, Nevada. The Discovery Channel referred to her as “an artistic genius” when she was eight years old. Members of the art community and other media outlets, such as the Huffington Post and Forbes, have referred to de Forest as a prodigy. See here.

To the left of the blue horse is one of my favorite rock stars of the art world, Michael Godard. If you have ever met him, you can see why. The man is larger than life and I adore him. You can recognize his work by his signature olive that is in everything he paints.

The flag and the Indian Headdress belong to Tim Yanke, who I have come to love, although most of his work is sold through this gallery.

20180314_212112.jpg

David Le Batard AKA LEBO is a popular Cuban born artist who lives in Miami. I want to say that he started out painting graffiti in the streets of Miami, and migrated towards whimsical, almost cartoon-like art. I will have to say that although these pieces may seem light-hearted and fun, they always have a story behind them and it usually is very deep.

20180314_212357.jpg

His style has been described as Postmodern Cartoon Expressionism. The man is so very zen.

20180308_115551.jpg

With the small space allotted to them on the ship, they cram in as many as possible.

20180308_114523.jpg

There is so much to look at and you are given tags to put on the pictures so they will pull them first to auction them off. The champagne is still flowing. Watch your intake. You don't need to lose your inhibitions when it comes to bidding.

20180308_115544.jpg

There is just an endless supply of art. Never enough for me.

Just keep it coming!

20180314_211823.jpg

Joan Miró was from Barcelona. Britanicca.com described him as such: Catalan painter who combined abstract art with Surrealist fantasy. His mature style evolved from the tension between his fanciful, poetic impulse and his vision of the harshness of modern life. He worked extensively in lithography.

Well, the look-see is over and we make out way back to our seats and wait as the auctioneer slams his gavel down to start the bidding.

And we are off!

Always a flower to color your world.

IMG_9201.JPG

While these auctions are a fun way to spend time while on the ship, it should be pointed out that art is one of those things that make a poor investment, so always make sure that you love what you are buying. It could make a good investment, but, you should never count on it.

Let the sun shine in on your life, so the joy may touch your soul.As always, keep on singing that song!! And just like that, this post is done. Thank you for stopping by and saying hello, leaving your words behind... and just so you know, although much sun and shine were used up today, I can guarantee that there is still a little left in my heart. Have a most fabulous day ahead!

Thank you for visiting my post 💖 Because of you, I come back to post, again and again. Keep it classy, people. Kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do.

Wow! I have learned so much with this one post!!! ❤

Thank you for introducing me to the world of painting, and to artists that I have never heard of. Maybe because I am from the other side of the world (?) or I am not really into painting (?) Probably. But I love painting. It is one of those talents I wish I have, but wasn't bless to have, unfortunately. 😢

Well, thank you for giving us a beautiful #MarketFriday post, Denise @dswigle. I might be late in making mine, but it will definitely come. Hehehe. 😂 I'll be back, promise. ❤

Hahaha! Well, you know that I always say that I learned something new on Steemit every day! Most of the Artist are new, although they have some Masters floating around and many that are from Europe and Israel (the new crop is from there)

Thank you as always for the generous support and #steemit love! Much appreciated! I look forward to your post, whenever it gets here. No problem!

A little accomodation at a luxury hotel mark my Market Friday. Quite expensive but very memorable for an average Indian like me.

Thank you so much, JJ @tattoodjay

It is fun to peruse the artwork that they have at your leisure. The gallery on board is open almost 24/7 although some ships close after midnight. It makes art part of your everyday life for a moment or three. You know better than most working in the city for so long. The city was your canvas.

Thank you for being so generous and kind with your support. Much appreciation and love sent your way. Thank you for also dropping your link!

Art is always precious, no matter what kind of art it is. It's great that there are these auctions on the ship, great exposure for the artists. I'm pretty sure I would have found a few paintings for myself.

You are so right, you know that? Art is always precious and something that I treasure. All different kinds of it. I was amazed the first time I saw that there was art on the ships!

I have been invited to special sailings where the artists are there to introduce their art to the world, even some that are well known. It is so easy to find many that you would love to hang on your walls, for me anyway!

I cannot convey to you how much your presence means. You are such a loyal and dedicated person and I want to thank you for the support you show me. Many thanks and much love.

It's hard to say. I shop a lot differently on land, going to larger auction houses and showings. Cruises can be fun, but, I believe you get what you pay for. And I know everyone has a price point, but, I just took an inexpensive cruise with hop on hop off (never to be named) and I won't do it again.

You will go someday! I know it! :)

Ship cruise is fun for a couple of days, not sure I would enjoy longer before starting to get cabin fever.

How ideas have changed with showcasing art onboard, novel way to enjoy seeing art from around the world. Entertainment always available to keep you occupied.

Art by Slava Ilyayev would have captured my eye, so good to hear you are comfortably back home, thanks for sharing your experience.

Oh, Joan! @joanstewart Thank you for stopping by and saying hello! I always look forward to your comments, as you know, they are meaningful and a joy to read.

The big ships are really a little city, aren't they? I would have to say that it is a good way to unwind and just be. Then again, boy!!! Can they be a hotbed of illness, close quarters and so many people. Yikes!

I actually have three Ilyayev paintings that I had bought some years ago (at different times and when he wasn't popular by any means) I was interested to see how they auctioned off, just to gauge if I had made a wise choice or not. I guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. They did well, but, even if they hadn't, I still would have been happy with mine.

I am glad to be home, especially with all going on and I will be here for the next little while! Thank you again, so very much and I hope you have a most wonderful weekend!

Ilyayev paintings come to life with different light falling on them, the vibrant warm colours he tends to use are eye-catching, I don't think anyone can go wrong buying one to enjoy, I have only ever seen them online never up on a wall.

Modern ships look like floating hotels, very top heavy I would hate to be in rough seas on one of them. Did a coastal trip from Durban to Cape Town on the old Union-Castle Liners originally named Transvaal Castle renamed SA Vaal, pop riveted sturdy boats that stopped running in 1977.

Three nights and four days was enough to have loads of fun, entertainment, grand elaborate meals and dance the night away. One of these days I must start my memoirs over the years.

Nothing like home, your own bed, family and pets surrounding one, have a wonderful new week.

Hahah! It really does, doesn't it? I do love that first painting! ( I had to scroll back and see which one the second one was) It happens to be everyone's favorite!

The colors and textures with using the palette knife to paint for those two artists were amazing! It was a great opportunity to see them in person and get a better understanding of how and why they paint, as different as the men were.

An art gallery?🖼 These modern cruise ships definitely have something for everyone!
And the quality of the artistry is commendable.
My favorite is the textured palette knife painting by Slava Ilyayev. Using a palette knife to oil paint is like putting frosting on a cake, except Slava clearly doesn't care if it's all smoothed out. The visual effect is remarkable.

Here's my Marketfriday entry: https://steemit.com/hive-148441/@ninahaskin/half-price-books-store

Hi, Nina!!! An art gallery! Who knew, right? Those bigger cruise ships are just like little cities... especially now with the viruses running rampant, no? It makes one happy to be on land.

The Ilyayev is one of my favorites too. I had bought one of his quite a few years ago, so I was very interested to see how much he auctioned off for. That is just his way of painting, interestingly. He always paints with a palette knife. And yes!! That is a great analogy, the frosting on a cake. :) Exactly. Like putting it on for a toddler. All frosting and no cake to speak of. The visual is what really caught my eye, to begin with. Many, to be honest. I was surprised by how many people were fawning over it.

I can never thank you enough for the support and #steemitlove that you send my way. Thank you, truly and thank you for taking the time to give kind and generous comments, wherever you go, whatever you do. And dropping the link here!!! Much appreciated!

Thank you for the generous tip! @dswigle

Your timing for the last set of cruises was impeccable in light of the coronavirus. Whew!
I enjoy living vicariously through photographs and tales from your amazing travels. You probably remember my last major vacation was to St. Martin last April and my suitcase is calling me to go on an adventure. Visiting my daughter in Dallas and son in college has filled the void. As of now, my family isn't in a hurry to fly anywhere in light of the virus.

Happy Friday, Denise!

Awesome works of art! I really like the palette painting; it really stands out!

Is the olive always a subject in the Godard paintings, like it is in this one? Does the olive always contain a pimento, and are they always green olives? ;)

Usually, but, he has evolved somewhat. It was how he got started and it actually took off. I bought a painting of his early on before he was a name, but, it had an olive in it! LOL

The heavy palette work is some of my favorites, the texture is so rich to me. I could never understand how they could do a whole painting that way until I watched the guy do the water lilies. It was an eight-foot by five-foot canvas framed up and bigger than life. But, he could paint!

I must say that I have seen strawberries, in a whimsical manner but yes. Olives always. :)

Having met and had dinner with him, I can say that he is larger than life. I think I come up to his navel. LOL Kidding, but, he is a pretty big guy and tatted up to the eyeballs, which goes nicely with his eyeliner. All in the image, I am sure.
