Worklife - Bringing the site to the Workshop
Good day everyone! Zak here from a sunny Cape Town, South Africa! This week has not been such a SCORCHER as last week had been.
Yesterday we received a Chiller at the workshop. Usually we service these units on site but we needed to remove it from site and give the unit a complete overhaul and testing done inside the workshop.
This is usually done to allocate resources easier and to put the Chiller into a controlled environment.
The unit was removed from the roof of the site by crane and then stuck on to this crane truck.
The unit is a Daikin air cooled chiller as you can see. It contains a refrigerant system that it keeps cool by blowing air over the coils at the top of the unit. That is the condensor coil and the fans are pointing straight up.
Then the chiller cools down water in the evaporator coils lower down. This water is then sent to AC units as Chilled Water to do work. Usually, the temperature of this water can range from -5C to 8C.
You will see in the picture below that the guy is adjusting the slings for his lift while standing on the Chiller.
This is not allowed at the docks due to H&S reasons. He should really be wearing an inertia reel and a body harness. The inertia reel should be connected to the hook at the top while he works. If he had to fall from there... straight to the tarmac.
The crane brought the chiller closer and then we stuck it on two pallet jacks and wheeled it into position inside the workshop and placed it on some blocks.
I shall see if I can take some pictures of the actual work that they will be doing on the chiller. It is likely to stay in position for around a week or two.

Interesting ! I'm always fascinated by mechanical things.
Dumb question; if the chilled water is between -5 and 8 degrees centigrade, what stops if freezing and blocking the whole system up ?
Great question!
Glycol is added to the water at 10-25% to lower the freezing temperature.
Ah, that makes sense ! So no draining off some of the water for a nice cool drink, then 😁
!LOL
Definitely not! It would, at least give you the runs. At worst... yeah 😵💫😵
There is also usually a water treatment chemical added to prevent rust on the inside of the piping.
And generally, this is a closed-loop system. You don't want to lose any water. Otherwise you have to top up the glycol and water treatment.
