My 1st post in WorkLife, and im at work right now at the Sleep Lab.

avatar

I hope you are all enjoying the day whether at work or at play. What else to say. Seems like a cool idea for a post and a cool new community so i hope my post is welcome.

I started the journey of going to school, only because i wasnt doing anything else with myself. No big dreams of university, i was always a little scared. My mom at that time was trying to easier to get into programs at a local community College and i decided i would give it a try.

It was a program to be in the field of sleep testing, otherwise known as Polysomnography. Which technically just means, multiple recordings, of sleep information. I only needed a couple prerequisites, nothing too complicated. An Anatomy and Physiology, a Medical Terminolgy class, no math, no English/Speech....thank god. I was always afraid of Speech class.

I wasnt a great student still as ive always been bad at doing homework. Heres one of the books we had from class though.

The Fundamentals of Sleep Technology. A lengthy, technical book covering disorders, respiratory, EEG (brain wave) and scoring of the study. Theres many rules to identifying what we see such as disordered breathing and which type of apnea it is, whether obstructive or central. It gets complicated.

The official program at the time was 1 year long, and was exactly 14 years ago to this date. I had classes about sleep stuff, EKG (heart), and had to do a clinical rotation which means i worked for free for about 13 separate nights. Each night was like practice with a person that was called a preceptor. Like an employee who is ok with taking the student to help teach and practice.

I was nervous as heck, thought about dropping out. Didnt know if i would make it through. I actually have a photo picture that i keep with me. Dont mind if i take a picture of a picture....

This is me near the end of clinical, when i told the lady to take a picture of me at the desk. Ahhh, the good old days.

Fast Forward to Now.

So, my workplace has been a subject of my posts quite a few times because im mostly working like a madman past few years. Was doing 2 jobs, now just 1 job, but extra hours most of the time to catch up on debts.

We setup a patient, most of the time 2 patients for me a night. Setup with wires and sensors to see how they sleep, more importantly how they breathe and how many times the person wakes up. The status of their oxygen baseline. Reading brain waves (EEG) to see when they sleep or if awakekening. Heres a few pics of the sensors...

Id love to show a picture of a patient with the wires on but of course that would be a HIPAA violation, so we cant do that lol.

Otherwise its been a good field. Good pay, but surely these hours are not ideal. Pros and cons, but ive generally enjoyed running the test and talking with patients about sleep.

I love doing my weird hallway pic at the lab here with an effect. Its a weird night here anyways because theres a couple patients that did not show for their appointment, so i will have to go home a little early, oh well. Cheers to the next post, hope you find the Title of a Sleep Tech kind of interesting.

The Fundamentals of Sleep Technology.

Interesting book title. I have not heard "sleep" and "technology" together so far.

A lengthy, technical book covering disorders, respiratory, EEG (brain wave) and scoring of the study. Theres many rules to identifying what we see such as disordered breathing and which type of apnea it is, whether obstructive or central. It gets complicated.

I am happy and glad that my disabilities are not related to sleeping. Of course the autism spectrum disorder is also a deep topic (maybe even deeper than the sleeping), but at least it is not a big obstacle for me. At least nowadays. It was huge in my childhood, but luckily/fortunately I was able to overcome of the most of it.

Great sharing your career in Polysomnography with us Quack Lee, that photo of you back in the day looks like a Splinterlands player trying to figure which is a summoner or monster lol.

Have a great day and week buddy.

I had made an appointment to have my sleep monitored. I was snoring and my girlfriend (at the time) was telling me that I was snoring and I was short of breath! Because I was 20, I preferred a night out with friends and canceled the appointment. After all these years, I have stopped snoring and having shortness of breath with a simple trick. I never eat 6 hours before I go to bed! Your work is very special! Good morning!

I love your job, I have never heard of it before, the sleep testing area, that means you can easily dictate on what makes people sleep easily, I will have loved you to test me because I hardly sleep sometimes.

Your mom did great for taking you to the community program.
Success on your job as Polysomnography.

It is not always easy combining two work but you did it.

Your write ups always find a way to make me laugh and this wasn't an exception.

That first book got me laughing as I had never heard of such work or any studying to do such work... Super cool!

I would have also love to see the wires on the patients but it's fine, I understand 😁

Nice picture of you by the hallway, happy that you'll be closing early hehe

It's an interesting topic but not everything works out the way we want them to. Personally, if people don't show up and you leave early, I think that is a plus. Getting some more sleep is way better not having it.

I know Ace. Sucks. I don't mind when im at work, still a policy so i must abide. In between whatever you know. Its a piece of paper literally, theres hardly any proof that its made a difference. Maybe a slight difference to keep some people from spreading, but in grand scheme of things it was going to make its way around anyways. Hope you been rockin buddy.

Wow, I've never thought I would come across someone who works in a sleep lab. I have a niece, studying psychology and they were studying about sleeping last year. She loved the topic and would love to work in research, but first she needs to finish uni. I'm sure she would envy you 😀

I read a post before where you talked about brain waves and showed some pictures. I did not know you work at the sleep lab. Glad to know about your work life. Looking forward to reading your next post, @captainquack22. :)

So it's called Polysomnography, I never knew that. Does that make you a Polysomnographer?

Both my brother and brother in law had sleeping issues and have been wired up by you guys. Now they both have to sleep with the oxygen mask. Dunno if that's a common treatment or considered serious. At least it helps with their sleep I'm told.

Hey thats cool. Yes, Polysomnographer can work. Usually we just say sleep tech. They probably have a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). Technically not oxygen, but like a pressure that helps keep the airway more open. Helps breathe morw normal and maintain better oxygen too. Good stuff, thanks for stopping by, nice to meet you.

I find it very interesting, but like you said, there are cons, and one of the most important ones will be working at night... Social life is a lot more difficult and I imagine that it isn't getting easier with the years.... Not that I mean you're getting old !LOL

No worries my bro. Im 37 now, so i do feel little older now, but its relative isnt it. We got years to rock my brother. Nights kinda sucks. I still need to find a nice wife. Maybe ill find a wife on hive.

ANY APPLICANTS WELCOME!

But yeah man, its been a blessing and curse at the same time.

I think lack of social life (I guess you're working as well in the weekend nights) won't make it easy to find a wife in real life?... !BBH

I like a lot how you make the drawings from the pictures, but this time the lines caught my attention. It gives a strange effect knowing that it's night and you're in a sleeping clinic. !LOL !CTP

Why do I find this job interesting. Your whole explanation makes me want to read up about EEG(I'll check it out tho).

Depriving yourself sleep because you want to know how someone sleeps..good one!

Not sure there's a sleep lab in my Homeland.
I've definitely learnt something new from this post.
Thank you for sharing it here.

Thanks for stopping by ya pretty lady. Yes, its a small field. Maybe they have a lab at a university in a larger city. EEG is little tough at first, takes practice and seeing many examples to get familiar with the patterns that indicate sleep, and awakenings.

Thanks for you comment, and keep rockin.

Well well, momma did chose a career for you right there.
I like the fact that you can study some courses at that tender age without maths or calculations, in this part of the world you must study maths even till your university level for whatever course you are reading...

Lazy or not am glad that you are doing well in that line...
