The duo who sang the song, Soft Cell, were virtually unknown outside the UK, but have become immortal. The group consisted of two northern musicians, keyboardist Dave Ball and singer Mark Almond. Combining a devotion to Nordic soul with another exclusively electronic duo called Suicide, they resurrected an old song that hadn't had a hit since Gloria Jones first recorded it in 1964. Her version was an instant hit. The song devoured the original so much that Almond said in an interview a few years ago that he and Ball had discussed adding it as co-writers. He would be the perfect ambassador for this moving song that captures the body and soul of African Americans. Arranged by Lincoln Mayorga, "Pure Love" was included on the B-side of Gloria Jones' 1965 single "My Bad Boy Is Coming Home."
