Three Tune Tuesday - songs in the key of π

China-Stadium2.jpg

A bit of an eclectic mix today. Some very different music but all based on a theme. Music is quite mathematical. The timing, the beat, to the overall formulas of most music Chorus/ Verse, Chorus/ Verse. It could all probably be summed up with an equation and today's is π. I have chosen three tunes around the theme of π or 3.141592653589 to its friends. He is a relation of the circle and acquaintance of the Golden mean that is my Avatar is based on.

Pi Soundtrack by Clint Mansell

My first track is actually a whole soundtrack for the film 'π'. Clint Mansell does a great job with Drum and bass to show the craziness this ever-increasing number can lead you to.

Darren Aronofsky's movie is a great portrait of a man obsessed with numbers and a fantastic directorial debut. Trying to understand the world through numbers Max tries to predict the stock market and just because he is paranoid does not mean they are not out to get him. It reminds me of what those crypto TA people must be like.

Clint's music contradicts the action in a way that shouldn't work but somehow does!

Pi by Kate Bush

You really can't go wrong with Kate Bush. I love the way that she can write a song about almost anything. And, if we wait long enough she probably will. Her reciting of PI is nearly hypnotic. With cyclical drums and tune, this is a masterpiece (says me).

Again she explores the obsession with numbers.

Pop fact Matimathians have been able to calculate pi to 22 trillion digits. Kate did edit her song a bit but if you are able to check for any string of numbers you can find them in PI. There is a website where you can search the first 200 million. My phone number is there.

After 13 years of going off and raising a family, Kate returned with Aerial and it is full of songs about washing machines, clothes dancing on the line and this one about PI.

PI as music by YouMJK

Finally, we have this nut job who has translated the number into music, Well the first 996 decimal places anyway. I must admit it sounds pretty good. I love that there are crazies around willing to do this sort of thing for art.

With so much modern music being formulaic it is nice to see someone trying a new one and I really think it adds up.

Music is Math by The Boards of Canada

I'll leave you with this bonus track from The Boards of Canada. Great band, and also worth exploring.

Thanks Hansel. When I hear the music that can be produced by AI these days it always has me wondering where it will all lead. Although there is a lot of math in music I always believe that it is the bits that just don't add up that give it its beauty.

Quality stuff right here man, class theme and I can't believe how sweet the 11 minutes of Pi was, really enjoyed it, deliciously mesmerising...

I hadn't actually heard that Kate Bush one before, she really can sing about anything at all and make it somehow spellbinding, can't she..

When I saw the title, I was thinking were is he going to go with π, very very far it turns out. Finished off very well then with The Boards of Canada, a great band as you rightly say..
