On January 15, 2022, a major eruption of the underwater volcano Hunga Tonga took place in the kingdom of Tonga. In this article we will try to explain the propagation of its shock wave, focusing on topics of geophysics, meteorology, chemistry and obviously aerodynamics.

IntroduzioneForeword
An enormous release of both solid and gaseous matter (or, in the case of lava, high viscosity liquid) causes potentially dangerous events not only from the point of view of high temperatures but also as regards the propagation of earthquakes, anomalous sea waves (tsunami), ash emission (dangerous for both life and mechanics, in particular in jet aircraft engines) and, like any explosion, it generates a pressure wave that spreads quickly: now we will try to explain how fast.
Cenni sulle esplosioniExplosions Elements
An explosion is generally speaking a very fast and strongly exothermic chemical reaction in which a substance tends to dissociate into smaller molecules through a combustion reaction. The propagation speed of the flame front inside the medium makes it possible to classify them into two families: deflagrations, where the flame front travels at speeds lower than that of sound, and detonations, where it travels at supersonic speeds.
Parecchio supersonico. For example, if we take nitroglycerin, C3H5N3O9 or better C3H5(ONO2)3, it very easily (it is a rather unstable molecule) dissociates according to this reaction: 4C3H5(ONO2)3 -> 6N2 + 12CO2 + 10H2O + O2: it is easy to understand that if from 4 molecules of a liquid (nitroglycerin) we obtain 29 gas molecules the reaction must be strongly exothermic and that a certain gas expansion must necessarily take place. In this case we speak of detonation because the flame front is supersonic. Quite supersonic.
Parliamo di vulcaniLet's talk about volcanoes
It is true that in the case of a deflagrating explosive, inside it, the flame front spreads at largely supersonic speeds, but this does not happen in other types of explosions. Volcanoes in fact certainly generate explosions due to the immediate release of enormous quantities of gas. It's not really a combustion explosion but the physical effects can definitely be compared. It is something much slower but still very dangerous.
Meanwhile, let's say that it would be better to refer at the sudden pressure variation, due to this type of explosion not, as a shock wave but simply as a pressure wave precisely because, obviously, there is no evidence that it can exceed the speed of sound. In truth, even in detonating explosives, the shock wave can extend for several meters but sooner or later it turns into a simple pressure wave, that is a place of space / time points around which sudden pressure variations can be measured. Still quite dangerous anyway.
Propagazione aerea dell'ondaAirwave propagation
Ogni fenomeno che si trasmette per mezzo dell'aria e grazie alle interazioni tra le sue molecole viaggia alla velocità del suono che è facilmente determinabile e pari a circa 340 m/sec a 288 K (o se preferite 1225 km/h a 15°C).Every phenomenon that is transmitted through the air and due to the interactions between its molecules travels at the speed of sound which is equal to about 340 m / sec at 288 K (or if you prefer 1225 km / h at 15 ° C).
This is simply due to the characteristics of the molecules that make up the air. It is necessary to imagine them a bit like the balls of Newton's pendulum, which demonstrate well the conservation of momentum: every "particle" of air (that is, every agglomeration of molecules, let's say a sphere of 20 oxygen molecules and 80 of hydrogen if we really want to imagine one as if it were a ball) "transmits" its momentum adiabatically (ie without heat exchange) to another adjacent one. By measuring the propagation speed of this "information transfer" we will discover that it is precisely the velocity of sound (which is precisely an adiabatic perturbation of the air in which the pressure variations are generally absolutely negligible, such as for example as happens with the vibrations of the strings in musical instruments and in many other phenomena).

Risultati attesiExpected results
For what has been stated so far, we must basically expect two things: a volcanic eruption creates a pressure wave and the latter propagates at the speed of sound in every direction.
Conoscendo quindi la distanza sulla terra di un punto qualsiasi dal vulcano, potremo aspettarci di misurare una repentina variazione di pressione dopo un tempo pari alla distanza divisa per la velocità del suonoKnowing therefore the distance on earth of any point from the volcano, we can expect to measure a sudden change in pressure after a time equal to that distance divided by the speed of sound.
Considerazioni storicheHistorical considerations
The ability to calculate the distance from a phenomenon based on the speed of sound has always been of great importance in history. For example in war, to know the distance of a piece of artillery, one could observe the phenomena related to the shot (flames and smoke from the cannon) long before hearing the roar. By measuring the time elapsed between the observation of the shot (which is practically instantaneous, the light travels at almost 300,000 km / sec...) and the occurrence of the roar it was possible to calculate more or less precisely the distance from the firing position. Today the same system is used when, after seeing a lightning bolt, you measure several seconds before hearing the thunder. It is the same principle. On some chronograph watches, a graduated scale called * telemeter * allows you to read the distance directly on the dial if you start the stopwatch hand when observing the phenomenon and stop it when you hear the roar.

Let's return to the Volcano: where is it?
Il vulcano è localizzato alle seguenti coordinate:The volcano is located at these coordinates:

20.536°S 175.382°W

Nota: le coordinate sono espresse in gradi e decimi di gradoNote: coordinates are given in decimal degrees
Più o meno siamo in mezzo all'oceano PacificoMore or less we are in the middle of Pacific Ocean
A che ora esattamente è avvenuta l'eruzione? What time did the eruption occur?
15 gennaio 2022, 04:14:45 UTCJanuary, 15 2020, 04:14:45 UTC
How far was the boom heard?
There are reports from New Zealand, 2000 km away, where the sound arrived two hours later (remember, the speed of sound is roughly 1000 km/h).
How high is the measured pressure variation?
In linea di massima abbiamo riporti di 7 hPa in Nuova Zelanda, 2.5 hPa in Svizzera e 2 hPa in InghilterraThere have been several measurements and, as expected, the greater the distance, the lower the intensity of the wave. In general, we have reports of 7 hPa in New Zealand, 2.5 hPa in Switzerland and 2 hPa in England.
Among many measurements (some of which are clearly incorrect, later we will see which ones) the most interesting is certainly that of Dan Holley, a meteorologist at the BBC. Here his twitter profile .Watton, in Norfolk (UK), is 16,500km from the volcano. The first wave, that of 19:15 UTC on January 15th, refers to the shortest route. In fact, the sound takes 13 hours and 30 minutes to travel 16500 km and the eruption started at 04:14 UTC. The delay of one hour is perfectly admissible since the pressure wave being a not particularly "fine" phenomenon, it is not certain that it can also travel at a speed slightly lower than that of sound or, as more likely, that it is was not caused by the first explosion of the eruption but by another following and more intense. It is also interesting to note the second wave which instead relates to the longest journey (ie the one that "bypassed" our planet on the opposite side and was recorded at 02:00 on the next day.

Misurzioni italianeItalian measurements
We Italians are always a bit of a bummer when it comes to time measurements. It has not been many years since at the Gran Sasso, for a problem with clocks synchronization , we made everyone mistakenly believe for a few days that neutrinos were superluminal (faster than light).
Ancora una volta non ci siamo smentiti su questo pianoOnce again we have not proven wrong.
On Facebook I noticed a post from an important university that deals with geophysical measurements where a wave speed of more than 500 m / sec is declared (it is in Italian but the numbers are easily understood by everyone):

IMG_8943.PNG

Più veloce del suono?Faster than sound?
Probably not and that's why I commented that, if the measurements were correct, it would certainly be interesting. Literally my comment, as you can see, simply asks to confirm the data as soon as possible.

IMG_8944.PNGMy comment: Interesting. Especially because it travelled faster than sound. Will You tell us something when it will be confirmed?

Not much actually. The post has been deleted (like my comment) and replaced by another where according to them "as someone pointed out to us". To be precise, they wrote: Assuming in about 10000 km the distance from Costa Rica with the propagation time that corresponds to 7 hours and 45 minutes, we find a propagation speed of 358 m / s equal to 1290 km / h. It remains, as someone had pointed out to us, a somewhat high value, almost corresponding to the speed of sound. Other sites and comments speak of 1100-1190 km / h. It is possible that there are still some details to check, but this will eventually be part of scientific insights. Note: they measured the difference in time between the wave measurement of a station in Costa Rica and their one in Italy.
Per ora purtroppo nessuna risposta.I also contacted a technician of the Observatory, an excellent science communicator and a certainly competent person, to explain that mine did not want to be controversial but only a healthy scientific curiosity. After all, things like these allow for new discoveries. Unfortunately no answer for now.
ConclusioniConclusions
In the current state of knowledge it is not impossible that in the immediate vicinity of an explosive device the shock wave propagates at supersonic speeds but soon the wave loses energy due to the interaction with atmospheric air and the remaining pressure wave will travel at no more than the speed of sound. This happens certainly when the explosion did not even initially have a supersonic front as it is more than likely when it comes to volcanoes.
