Calcium in the periodic table of the elements – Il calcio nella tavola periodica degli elementi

(Edited)

Hello everybody,

Today I would like to talk about Calcium, one of the most famous element in the periodic table.

Introduction

Calcium is a chemical element with the symbol Ca and atomic number 20. We find it in two possible states of oxidation: 0, +2.

It is a very reducing alkaline earth metal and reacts quickly with water with the development of hydrogen:

Ca + 2 H2O --> Ca2+ + 2 OH- + H2 --> Ca(OH)2

Biological interactions

Calcium is considered an essential element for our body. In fact, we have about 1 kg of it, 90% of which is distributed in the bones in the form of calcium phosphate, in the teeth and in biological liquids.

The plasma concentration of Ca is 100 mg/L, but only 2/3 are available for biological activity, the rest is linked to specific proteins.

Calcium is essential for the functioning of excitable membranes, enzymes and is also associated with some hormones.

This element assumes particular importance in some phases of life, in which its demand in terms of daily intake has increased: growth, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Calcium is mainly taken through the diet and we can find it in:

  • Milk and dairy products;
  • Water;
  • Spinach;
  • Oranges;
  • Chia seeds;
  • Legumes;
  • Almonds;
  • Cabbage.

The metabolism of this important metal is regulated by parathyroid hormone, calcitonin and vitamin D.

Compounds of pharmaceutical interest

There are numerous compounds of pharmaceutical interest that contain calcium:

  • Sulphate: Most likely, it is the best known pharmaceutical form. In fact, the casts are mostly made up of calcium sulphate. In addition, it is an excellent excipient for capsules and tablets;
  • Hydroxide: It is used for skin lotions and emulsions of the water-in-oil type as it forms, with fatty acids, soaps that act as a surfactant. In dentistry, we also find calcium hydroxide based pastes;
  • Carbonate: It is used as an antacid, especially in association with other antacid agents such as magnesium salts. This form is also used to reduce the appearance of constipation, in the treatment of hypocalcaemia and as an adjuvant in osteoporosis;
  • Chloride: It is a useful supplement in hypocalcaemia, but it is also used as a hemostatic because it is astringent;
  • Phosphate: Its main use is in toothpaste as an abrasive;
  • Bibasic phosphate dihydrate: It is the main calcium supplement that is prescribed in pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  • Edetate: It is a powerful antidote for detoxification from divalent cations such as heavy metals and is known as EDTA.

Analytical reactions

Calcium recognition is based on the following reactions:

  • In a solution acidified with acetic acid of a calcium salt, if we add potassium ferrocyanide and ammonium chloride, we see the formation of a white precipitate:
    Ca2+ + K+ + NH4+ + [Fe(CN)6]4- --> CaKNH4[Fe(CN)6]

  • Flame test: The calcium salts, deposited on a platinum strand of concentrated hydrochloric acid, impart a very characteristic red color to the oxidizing flame.

Ciao a tutti,

Ca + 2 H2O --> Ca2+ + 2 OH- + H2 --> Ca(OH)2

Interazioni biologiche

  • Latte e latticini;
  • Acqua;
  • Spinaci;
  • Arance;
  • Semi di chia;
  • Legumi;
  • Mandorle;
  • Cavolo.

  • Solfato: Molto probabilmente, è la forma farmaceutica più conosciuta. Infatti, le ingessature sono costituite per la maggior parte da calcio solfato. Inoltre, è un ottimo eccipiente per capsule e compresse;
  • Idrossido: È utilizzato per le lozioni cutanee e emulsioni del tipo acqua in olio in quanto forma, con gli acidi grassi, dei saponi che fungono da tensioattivo. In odontoiatria, troviamo anche paste a base di idrossido di calcio;
  • Carbonato: Trova impiego come antiacido, specialmente in associazione con altri agenti antiacidi come i sali di magnesio. Questa forma è impiegata anche per ridurre la comparsa di stipsi, nel trattamento dell’ipocalcemia e come coadiuvante nella patologia dell’osteoporosi;
  • Cloruro: È un integratore utile nell’ipocalcemia, ma viene anche usato come emostatico perché è astringente;
  • Fosfato: Il suo impiego principale è nelle paste dentifrice come abrasivo;
  • Fosfato bibasico diidrato: È il principale supplemento di calcio che viene prescritto in gravidanza e in allattamento;

    Ca2+ + K+ + NH4+ + [Fe(CN)6]4- -> CaKNH4[Fe(CN)6]
