y = # ₱500 bills
x = # of ₱50 bills = 8y
z = # of ₱200 bills = x - 50 = 8y - 50

50x + 500y + 200z = 15,000
50(8y)+500y+200(8y-50)=15,000
400y+500y+1600y−10000=15000
2500y=25000
y=10
x=8y=80
z=x-50=30 --> 30 ₱200 bills

He has 30 bills worth ₱200 each....

I didn't solve it with a... I just brute-forced it assuming he had 10, ₱500 bills and figured I'll change my assumption depending on the result:

8x10(50) + 10(500) + (X)200 = 15,000

Remember kids: Brute force is always the solution.

Answer for Day 5 Math Problem

30 pieces 🎯

Solution

The problem is under money problems (more appropriately called money denomination problems) in elementary algebra.

Since the quantity of ₱500 bills does not depend on the quantity of other bills in the given problem, we will represent it using a variable x.

DenominationQuantityTotal
₱500x500x
₱508x400x
₱2008x - 501600x - 10000

We will add the totals of each denomination in terms of x such that they have a total of 15,000.

500x + 400x + 1600x - 10000 = 15000
2500x = 25000
x = 10

Substituting 10 to x in (8x - 50) which is the quantity of ₱200 bills, @chrisrice has 30 pieces of ₱200 bills. He also has 10 pieces of ₱500 bills and 80 pieces of ₱50 bills.
