Tonic immobility is a trance-like state similar to hypnosis which occurs in a variety of species. Researchers will often use it to subdue sharks in order to reduce struggling and possible injury.

I guess maybe if a suggestible person were hypnotized to believe that it would happen to them. That's just being technical; the point to that is the human mind's ability to reach a hypnotic state more likely than not has an evolutionary origin.😎
