How can you tell if your smartphone is good at playing music? By the number of gigs it has. Credit: reddit @ahmadmangazap, I sent you an $LOLZ on behalf of @wanderingmoon

Actually the word "Earthling" has always applied to all life on planet Earth. I am not sure why you wrote "...Earthling is usually used to refer to Humans..." and then proceeded like the "usually" word didn't exist.
The -ling suffix means "'having the qualities of'' or 'related to'" while other sources define the -ling suffix as "a small or young person or thing." In either case "Earthling" is "a thing" "having the qualities of or related to'" the planet Earth. Things like humans, cats, dogs, other animals, and even bugs are all Earthlings.
Prior to around the 1960s most fiction that described the relationship between other worldly beings and people of Earth would refer to the people of Earth as "Terrans" from the Roman word Terra means "Earth" Terran became less common when popular science fiction, primarily Star Trek, realized aliens probably wouldn't speak human languages so science fiction introduces the concept of a universal translator. Then they realized not only can the aliens speak to Terrans but all the other Earthling lifeforms using a universal translator. Then they get lazy and just called Terrans Earthlings.
P.S. Watch more Stargate Tau'ri. While you are at it Earthican watch some Futurama.👽

I meant "usually in #fiction," I don't remember the other examples but Dragon Ball Z is a big example of what I mean.
...and now, I'm seeing what's wrong in my logic, haha.

Well, thanks for the lesson! I should've read more Sci-fin before buzzing because it seems I didn't know what I was talking about.

Since we eat earthlings, does that make us cannibals?
I don't want to think of it that deep, but wow! We must look really savage to the aliens that come here, unless they're worse than us!
