The more complex they're , the more it's difficult to Stay Human - Unity Challenge Conclusion [EN - FR]

(Edited)

Hello everyone, I hope your week went well ! I of course mean "tools" but I guess you will have understood that :)

To conclude the challenge launched last week, I'd like to take a sort of opposite approach, as some seem to have preferred to talk about technology, but not so much about tools in general. Yet, whether it's a shovel or a phone, both are tools. But what is the fundamental difference between them ? Is it their need for electricity ? Their apparent sophistication ? Before answering, let's look at two definitions...

Tool :

  1. An object that is manufactured, used manually or on a machine to perform a specific operation.
  2. An element of an activity that is only a means, an instrument : Statistics are an indispensable tool for good management.

Technology :

  1. Study of the tools, machines, processes and methods used in the various branches of industry.
  2. All the tools and materials used in the craft industry and in industry.
  3. A coherent body of knowledge and practice in a certain technical field, based on scientific principles.

It's not surprising that tools are therefore part of technology in general. So, in my opinion, what differentiates a primary tool like a shovel or a hammer from a computer or a rocket is the degree of complexity. Because the objective is basically the same : it's about achieving a given objective.

However, what really affects our humanity in our relationship with the tools we use is the degree of dependence we have with them. Let's continue with the example of a shovel and a telephone...

What do these two tools allow us to do and what needs do they meet ? The telephone serves the need for communication between people. Yet, when I look at archival videos, people who didn't know each other seemed to be talking to each other more, whereas if you take the metro in a big western city (I use this example because I know it), everyone is glued to their screens and not paying any attention to what's around them. Maybe they are doing interesting things, but maybe not at all. At the same time, the internet and related tools allow me to chat with you and it's devilishly pleasant ! The point here is that while these tools are great, using them takes us out of our present life, out of where we are, when we are there.

Let's take the shovel. I know that for those who have access to technology or have lived with it since birth, they may feel that making an effort with these tools is not noble, is dirty or not worthy of them. Yet with a shovel you can plant trees, make irrigation canals, plant your vegetable garden. In short, you can feed yourself and become more independent. And that is noble and I think it connects us more to our natural humanity, our natural part.

I am a child of the internet and have learned thousands of things through this medium, yet without applying these in the real world, not much would have happened for me. The internet is more complex than a shovel, but if you have one without the other, nothing good will come of it. I'd like to conclude with a few more personal thoughts about these tools...

  • The more complex a tool is, the more difficult it is to identify the uses that are really useful to us. Today, 80% of the time people spend connected is spent playing games or sending videos by the thousands. But is this making them happier or more independent ? I doubt it... On the other hand, I think that if used properly, these tools would (and already do) allow us to do great things and for some to provide an income and a means of living, which is just as noble.

  • The tools correspond to models of society. The more we develop life over phones at the expense of shovels, the more we will need them.

  • "If it's free, you're the product." This is a sentence from a French film about advertising that has always stuck in my head. Have you ever wondered why the Internet is almost totally free ?

  • Of a shovel or a telephone, which one dominates you more? Who is the servant or the tool of the other in the end ? Something to think about...

These are the thoughts that have been maturing in my mind over the last few years and during this week of reading some of your articles. You'll have noticed that I haven't stopped by each of you yet, but I myself am trying to find a balance between the potential of the internet and online life, what I gain from it and what I leave behind from my physical and more tangible life 😉 !

However, I'll definitely be coming by in the next few days ! As I said in the introduction, I wanted to take the opposite view of some articles I read, but basically, it is an opinion linked to the way I live things deeply. However, I'd be happy to discuss it a bit, in the comments or on Discord !

UNITY SPACER II.png

The articles

I've seen less participation and I think that's maybe because of the lack of additional reward. That's fine because I also wanted to identify a bit of the relationship between these two things. After that, don't get me wrong, if you didn't participate this time, it's not that I think you were only there for that ^^ ! We all have our own schedules and I can only see a global trend here. But I'm not going to focus on those who didn't participate, but on those who took the time to share articles and bring their lights on the topic !

Here are the different articles classified by their order of arrival :

I take the liberty of mentioning some of you... Also, if you wish to be mentioned (or no longer mentioned) please tell me in the comments !

Curation and delegation.

I have recently created the @unity-freedom account which will be used for curating community articles. We're also working on a tool that would redistribute 70/80% of the rewards from delegations, but that will be made clear in a future update !

Anyway, you can already follow the curation trail and/or delegate to @unity-freedom rather than the "@hive-189277" account !

Gratitude !

As announced in the previous article, a new team has joined the moderation and organisation of the community. They are @quduus1, @wongi, @george-dee, @balikis95 and @funshee ! Thanks to them, and to all of you who participated once or several times ! I would also like to thank @resonator for his support for the issues, research and questions related to the notion of unity and its impact on each of us.

A little note for the end...

Please note that I created this community with the idea of unity in mind, so even though I am at the origin of it, I perceive this space as a place of freedom of speech, opinion and initiative ! Also, if you wish to propose something at some point, the result of a particular desire related to the idea of unity, you are welcome :) Here is also the link of the Discord - I am not always very active there, but it is still a good way to communicate.

This is also where you can share your ideas and proposals - as well as in the comments of this article !

I thank you for reading this long article. And, of course, for your possible participation and support of the idea and actions of unity. I hope you will find the subject interesting :)

Take care of yourself and your loved ones !
See you soon,

<3

<3

You made a really good point about tools and technology and I also feel like one is as better as the other, they both serve different purposes that meets standards. Just like our vehicles, aeroplanes, motorcycle, bicycle and so on it shows that we have an unending dependence on these tools and technology and the time goes by.

I'm so happy I was able to join in the challenge, thank you for the mention 🤗

This is indeed what comes to my mind about the actual tools that are great for sure but could also a big distraction toward the realization of our projects... and also a great help when used wisely :)

Thanks you for your renewed participation dear, I hope you’ll enjoy a good weekend ✌️😘

Well I hoped to participate in this but mehn to be honest in all aspect, the last couple of days has been very hectic for me offline, less sleep on daily basis, I even missed a day of posting which doesn't happen very often, I couldn't even welcome the new members on discord, it is just so full, my posts this week are all last minute post, well atleast it was good to have some participation in the prompt, it's better and hopefully I will join in the next one....

I'm glad that I was able to join again this week. I enjoyed reading your tools analysis above.

The most important thing is how we can use tools at our disposal to our benefit and not let them be a great source of distraction from our roots or things that matter in our life.

using them takes us out of our present life, out of where we are, when we are there.

This is really a sad reality. Technology is good, it is a big help for us but if we allow it to control our lives instead us to control it, it will really bring not good in our life. There are many children nowadays who are longing for quality time from their parents but how sad many are too busy in an unimportant things because they are just playing or watching videos. I am part of this sometimes😢

On the other hand you're right that learning how to use tools like shovel is one thing that we need to learn and teach our children how to use it. It is one of the basic skills to learn in life.

Hello @sumotori ! That's exactly it, it reminds me of a conference I saw back in the day where there was an engineer who was involved in the launch of telecoms... but didn't have a "smart"phone himself. Can't find it now :/
