One of the technical words that resonate most in Formula 1 is "aerodynamics". It is a physical phenomenon that the designers of the cars must study in detail for the car to be efficient when driving at high speeds. So much so, that in Formula 1 you can have the most powerful engine, but still be last in the race, and this is largely due (among many other things) to the aerodynamic efficiency of the car.

But, What is aerodynamics? and how does it influence racing cars? In this publication, as a long-time Formula 1 fan, I will try to explain this to all readers, both racing fans and non-fans. It's something that not only applies to motor sports, but also affects common cars, although its importance is minor since people don't drive cars at full speed on the streets, at least not most of them.

Aerodynamics is a branch of mechanics that studies air flow around bodies, and since this encompasses many technical aspects and specific knowledge that I do not possess and that would also make this publication endless, I will limit myself to giving a concise or basic demonstration of how it affects racing cars.

La fuerza del aire / The force of the air

The air can hardly be felt, it is almost as if it did not exist. But in fact, air has weight, more specifically a density, even if it is very small compared to that of other materials. However, if we take our arm out into a car on the highway, you can feel the air hitting you arm hard. The same thing happens with Formula 1 cars, only at much higher speeds, the air hits harder.

This air resistance to the advance makes the car go slower. On the one hand we have the driving force of the engine and on the other the force offered by the air against it. It is the job of the engineers and designers of the cars in each team to take advantage of the resistant force of the air at high speeds. Why "take advantage of it" and not "reduce it" to the maximum?

Dos extremos / Two extremes

Basically we have two extremes, and neither is good.

You could well build an "airplane", that is, a totally smooth car that reduces the force of the air against it as much as possible, but this will hardly be able to turn in the corners. In other words, on the straights it will be an "airplane" but in the curves it will be like "driving on ice", with very little grip, forcing you to drive at very low speed.

At the other end, a tractor could be built. In other words, a car that is the opposite of "smooth", with surfaces perpendicular to the air flow. Assuming that we equipped this tractor with a Formula 1 engine, this car would have a very limited speed on the straights, due to the higher air resistance, but it will be able to face the curves at higher speed, because the higher air force "presses the car down", making it have more grip and stability in curves.

Each team builds its own chassis, that is, they make their own design according to their own criteria and tests in wind tunnels following the current regulations. Therefore, each team usually presents cars of different appearance. There are many variables and technical issues involved in the design of the car, but to simplify a bit, we will divide the Formula 1 car into 3 parts: the front wing, the "body" and the rear wing.

The "body" is basically the chassis, everything except the spoilers (wings), it's almost the entire surface of the car. The teams design the chassis so that the car "flows" as efficiently as possible in the air and also try to redirect the air to certain areas. For example, the openings behind the front tires and above the rider's helmet are ducts that redirect air to the engine and other areas that are often hot.

While the "body" or chassis of the car is important for aerodynamics, much of the work is concentrated in the wings. Each team presents its own designs, and they usually vary from race to race. The different protrusions are intended to create air flows and vortices that somehow benefit the aerodynamic efficiency of the car. This already involves very deep technical aspects that are beyond my knowledge. However, if there is something that is not very difficult to understand it is the difference between the spoilers that are used in fast circuits and those that are used in more stuck circuits.

Carga aerodinámica según el circuito / Aerodynamic load according to the circuit

In fast circuits, such as Monza or Silverstone, where there are long straights and high speeds are usually reached, a tendency to put flatter spoilers can be observed in all the equipment, that is to say, with a lower inclination, in order to reduce the surface perpendicular to the air flow, allowing the cars to reduce the air resistance and thus reach high speeds with less difficulty.

On slower and more stuck circuits, like Monaco or Hungary, the wings of the cars are much more inclined, trying to take advantage of the air resistance. The straights are shorter, so it is not important to reach the maximum speed but to be able to go through the slow curves at the highest possible speed. This position of the spoilers tends to increase the aerodynamic load, making the car "pressure" more against the ground, increasing their grip and stability in the curves.

Of course there are circuits that have intermediate characteristics and each team and driver will decide how much aerodynamic load to place on the car according to how he feels more comfortable. There are circuits that include both long straights and locked sectors and present a greater technical challenge in terms of deciding what aerodynamic configuration is best. It is worth mentioning that during the race, the mechanics who attend the car can reduce or increase the aerodynamic load of the front wing by means of a kind of lever, as requested by the pilot by radio.
