You may have heard the word metaphysics somewhere and you may not relate it to things like science, engineering, anything that employs reason and exact methods. It may be that some people within the field of science relate the word metaphysics to dubious or pseudo-scientific things. But the truth is that before the emergence of science great philosophers like Aristotle, Descartes, Leibniz, and others, wrote and talked about metaphysics, whose ideas are still valid today and even some of them surely served as a basis for modern science.

But in this post I'm not going to talk about very deep or theoretical things about metaphysics, since I'm not an expert on it and you can find more on Google, but what I can personally understand about what there is, beyond physics, in terms of engineering and science. I am an Engineer, so I can describe some things within engineering that, from my perspective, have a lot of metaphysics in them. I will also try to talk a little bit about science in general.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to participate in previous #Humanitas community initiatives. Engineering beyond the physical

Engineering uses a lot of calculations. You've probably heard it, and it's absolutely true. Calculations, numbers, engineering projects, it all seems to be a world totally dominated by the logical and the exact. However, engineering also uses a lot of abstraction, graphic schemes to represent an idea, a solution, something, and that is where I am going to focus. Before building a construction project, there is an original idea. That idea comes from something, from a need of the population or society that would benefit from the construction of that work. We could ask ourselves: Why or for what is it being built? That is, it is built because there is a potential good or welfare to be achieved.

But the point is that the idea of that work is not something material. Perhaps it begins to manifest itself when certain estimates, calculations, and finally plans are made that represent that future work schematized on paper. And from there it could be determined how much material will be needed, how and in how much time it can be built. Up to this point nothing has been built. And perhaps none of this matters if nothing is finally built, but beyond the physical, there is a whole idea manifesting and forming, through the intellect of the people who plan the project.

The work finally built is only the final step, perhaps the most important and useful, but it is only the final step. That physical work would not exist without first having been only a metaphysical idea. Although it sounds illogical or absurd, it could be said that the physical structure is only 1% of everything. In the end, what engineering does is to find the most efficient way to bring that metaphysical idea to something physical. Even calculations, numbers, plans, schematics, etc., are representations of things that do not yet exist in the physical. We use these things to bring the idea into reality. Numbers are not something tangible either, but they are a tool to determine physical measurements.

The internal forces and energy that are not seen.

Now, let's go to something more practical. In the diagram below we have a water pipe. So far, everything looks normal. But it turns out that in engineering we usually study parameters such as the velocity of the water, the pressure that the water exerts on the pipe, the height of the pipe, etc. It is possible to calculate these things using mathematical equations. But there is another, more visual and "creative" way to study them, and that is by means of graphs that show how these parameters change in value along the pipe.

Fuente

In the end, what we see with our eyes is only a pipe. But there are things going on there that are not visible to the naked eye, such as the lines shown in the diagram. These lines represent the aforementioned parameters. Although we do not see anything beyond the pipe, there are "forces" or energy moving as water passes through it. Those lines, which we can represent in a diagram, represent something that is not seen but is happening there. That "internal energy" could be an analogy to the human soul. If we could see those lines with our eyes we might notice things like, for example, excess pressure that could rupture the pipe, or that a pump is needed to add energy:

Fuente

And the same could be said for other areas of engineering. In buildings there are forces acting on beams and columns, which can be expressed graphically. You can't see them, but they are there, and based on them the building is the way it is. If they were different, the building would be designed differently. In all or almost all engineering, solutions are designed or engineered based on things that do not yet exist and with forces or factors that we do not see but that we can somehow predict or estimate.

Fuente

Science

And somehow science also employs similar elements. I can think of, for example, the same mathematics that we have already mentioned. In calculus there are very, very abstract things, like vector functions or Fourier Series, which come to haunt any engineering student, but perhaps they are something normal for a mathematician. These are all things that go beyond the physical, we have been arriving at them through reasoning.

Perhaps another example in science could be biology, since instead of studying only the physical, one could also study the emergence of things like morality or the perception of good and evil, from the evolutionary point of view, in mammals and human beings. In physics we study natural phenomena, forces and phenomena that we do not see, and although all that is based on logical and rational foundations, as quantum mechanics and the depths of matter are studied, science enters into unknown and unpredictable terrain. There is much misleading on the internet about the word "quantum", much used for pseudo-scientific and pseudo-philosophical purposes, but that does not take away from the above.

.

Perhaps in another post we could go deeper with the topic of science and what lies beyond the physical so as not to lengthen this one. Thanks for visiting my blog. Best regards!
