I am not used to write or talk about very sentimental things. However, I think I can provide a view of love that is a little different but quite similar in substance to what has been expressed in all the other participations in this initiative in the #Humanitas community.

Here is the link to the initiative: Initiative: What name would you give to love. In the Humanitas community.

Let's start first talking about the scientific part and then make the connection to the more humanistic part. A scientist could tell you that love is chemicals that the body secretes, more specifically in the brain, to make us feel good. Nothing more than that. However, it is obvious that not everyone will agree with this definition (including me).

The body secretes three key substances when talking about love-related experiences. We have dopamine (pleasure and euphoria, giving love), serotonin (emotions, mood, pleasure and bonding), and oxytocin (attachment, closeness, contact and affection). I got this information from this video.

The brain secretes these substances when we are in the presence of one or more people we love. They help us to strengthen the bond with those people, or to want to seek it. We are mammals, and one of the reasons why this is so is because we learned to survive in groups. These pleasure-related substances drive us and drove us to seek closeness with others in order to cooperate in a group, and thus have a better chance of success.

What is love? a verb, a philosophy, a religion? Source

To all these we could ask ourselves what or who tells the brain to secrete these substances? It could be said that there is a Law or intelligence in nature that made us this way. However, in the human being we have seen things that seem to go a little beyond the biological. The human being, unlike animals, is capable of giving unconditionally and consciously, even without receiving anything in return. This goes beyond any chemical substance we may secrete in our brain. We could also ask ourselves, can a reptile feel love? An insect? A microorganism?

I haven't really read much about love in terms of prominent philosophers in history. But one character in the Bible who could represent love from this point of view, of unconditional giving, is Abraham. This character pitched his tent on the side of a desert road, willing to give food and water to anyone who passed by wearily, without receiving anything in return. It is obvious that Abraham was one of the Bible characters with the greatest faith or connection with God. This level of unconditional love even led him to the point of sacrificing his own son, and such a level of conviction led him to finally not have to do so.

Today, humans have also learned that it is possible to artificially stimulate these brain chemicals, but in a way that is perhaps a bit flawed. That is why some might say that they have stolen the name of love today. Valentine's Day today has become a rather superficial celebration. It's not easy to get to Abraham's level of awareness about love, but I think everyone somehow learns it over time.

What name would I give to love? The energy that moves everything.
