[en][es] Results obtained from my intergeneric cross between Duvalia sulcata and Huernia x guttata / Resultados obtenidos de mi cruce Intergenérico entre Duvalia sulcata y Huernia x guttata

Hello Hivers lovers of succulents. In this article I want to share advances of my results in the intergeneric hybridization between Huernia x guttata and Duvalia sulcata. Both plants belong to the Stapeliinae subtribe of the Apocynaceae family. This group of succulents are generally known as carrion flowers because many species expel foul odors to attract pollinators. The pollination method of these plants is somewhat complex and requires specific positions of the pollinia in the flowers for pollination to occur.

Hola Hivers amantes de las plantas suculentas. En este artículo quiero compartir avances de mis resultados en la hibridación intergenérica entre Huernia x guttata y Duvalia sulcata. Ambas plantas pertenecen a la subtribu Stapeliinae de la familia Apocynaceae. Este grupo de suculentas en general son conocidas como flores de carroña debido a que muchas especies expelan olores fétidos para atraer polinizadores. El método de polinización de estas plantas es algo complejo y requiere de posiciones específicas de las polinias en las flores para que ocurra la polinización.

The cross that I show in this article was done manually with the help of a stereoscopic microscope about two years ago. I cultivated the resulting seeds with the greatest possible care in order to obtain the greatest possible number of hybrids and observe the resulting variability. Currently how many with 24 genotypes of the cross where 12 have already flowered and I show them in the photograph. It is very interesting the genetic dominance that Duvalia sulcata has in the resulting plants with little perceptible color variations in the flowers. In addition, morphological changes in floral shape and size and some color variations in the crowns of the gynostegum are mainly observed.

El cruzamiento que muestro en este artículo lo realicé manualmente con ayuda de un microscopio estereoscópico hace aproximadamente dos años. Las semillas resultantes las cultivé con los mayores cuidados posibles con el fin de obtener el mayor número de híbridos posibles y observar la variabilidad resultante. Actualmente cuanto con 24 genotipos del cruce donde ya 12 han florecido y los muestro en la fotografía. Es muy interesante la dominancia genética que posee Duvalia sulcata en las plantas resultantes con variaciones de colores en las flores poco perceptibles. Además, se observan principalmente cambios morfológicos en la forma y tamaño floral y algunas variaciones de colores en las coronas del ginostegio.

The name I gave to this generation of hybrids is x Huervalia ˡ Cuban Start ˡ to indicate its origin (Cuba) and the star shape of the flowers. To differentiate the hybrids, the clone terminology and its corresponding number are added. The term clone is erroneously used in this plant group because its botanical concept indicates the vegetative propagation of a particular plant. El nombre que le puse a esta generación de híbridos es x Huervalia ˡ Cuban Start ˡ para indicar su origen (Cuba) y la forma estrellada de las flores. Para diferenciar los híbridos se agrega la terminología clon y su número correspondiente. El término clon es erróneamente empleado en este grupo vegetal debido a que su concepto botánico indica la propagación vegetativa de una planta en particular.
