Virgil Griffith had traveled to North Korea to advise an audience there on the use of crypto, allegedly to bypass the sanctions regime. For that, he has now been sentenced to over 5 years in a federal prison. According to the law under which he was charged, it could have been up to 20 years.

It is a bit curious that he even traveled there physically. That aside, technologies such as crypto are likely to make the world a single financial space - and there is little anybody can do about that, short of a full separation from the internet. And even that is not guaranteed to work.

I think that Russia are also violating the current sanctions of the US after war by using cryptocurrencies. I think there is no way to prevent this.
