Le Corbusier originally his name is Charles-Édouard Jeanneret; 1887 - 1965, French architect of Swiss origin who, together with Walter Gropius, was the main protagonist of the international architectural renaissance of the 20th century. He was a genius, the so-called ‘father of modern architecture’ did not pursue academic studies in this discipline of architecture. While studying printmaking at the La Chaux de Fonds School of Arts, he met Charles L'Eplattenier, a multifaceted painter and pioneer of Art Nouveau in Switzerland who was his teacher and brought him closer to architecture. Along with Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier was instrumental in creating the International Style in the Modern movement of architecture. It was a movement defined by rectilinear shapes, open interiors and structures using the new building materials produced massively after the industrial revolution of the 20th century.

Everything is based on influences and stimuli that we receive in our lives, and this great genius was no exception. Le Corbusier successfully delved into painting, sculpture, design, and letters; However, it was in architecture that it became a benchmark of the twentieth century, providing theoretical innovations that changed the way in which spaces and buildings were reasoned at that time and laying the foundations of modern architecture. Le Corbusier has 17 works in different countries of the world declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

  • One of his ideas in his architecture was functionalism, which tries to simplify the structures of the architectural styles existing at that time like Art Nouveau, to respond only to the utilitarian function of each space using simple geometric shapes.

  • Another of his ideas was the Modulor Le Corbusier took up the old ideal of establishing a direct relationship between the proportions of buildings and those of man. The Modulor is a measurement system, based on human stature in relation to mathematical numbers. It was represented with a man raising his arm, thus indicating the important points of the body measurements determined by the golden ratio. Le Corbusier was not the first to have the need to establish a system of human proportions for design. In Chapter I of book III of Vitruvius, the ancient system of measurements is explained, whose base is the height of the human body divided into 4,5,6,8 and 10 equal parts, which gave rise to the Vitruvian Man by Leonardo Da Vinci.

  • He promoted the 5 pillars of his architecture, which you can see in the first house that I placed in this post, it is the Villa Savoye. The 5 commandments are:
1- Buildings raised on pilotis: the surface at ground level must be occupied by the movement of the car, the protagonist of the public space.

2- Open plan: the structure must be placed on the perimeter of the project so that it does not interfere with the interior design.

3- Free facade: the structure is removed from the front line to allow greater freedom.

4- Horizontal window: the opening extends along the entire length of the facade, guaranteeing an optimal level of illumination for the entire interior due to the measurements and projection used.

5- Garden terrace: the amount of natural space that a building occupies when it is built must be returned to nature with the creation of a garden on the roof of the building.

There is much more interesting content about this architect, but to introduce you a little to the subject, this information seemed ideal to me. Tell me in your country did you know this architect? What do you think about his legacy and his influence on the history of architecture?
