Conociendo el Puente de la Mujer // Knowing The Woman's Bridge

Una manera de disfrutar la arquitectura es visitando sitios emblemáticos de las ciudades. Hace unos años tuve la oportunidad de viajar a Buenos Aires y me enrumbé a conocer sus obras arquitectónicas más hermosas que forman parte de la historia de la ciudad y cuentan mucho de la inspiración de su creador.
La ciudad de Buenos Aires es sin lugar a dudas un museo a cielo abierto, donde podemos conseguir gran cantidad de obras de arte permanentes representadas en distintas edificaciones y espacios urbanos con una gran variedad de estilos arquitectónicos.

One way to enjoy the architecture is visiting emblematic sites of the cities. A few years ago I had the opportunity to travel to Buenos Aires and I went to know its most beautiful architectural works that are part of the history of the city and tell much of the inspiration of its creator.
The city of Buenos Aires is undoubtedly an open-air museum, where we can get a lot of permanent works of art represented in different buildings and urban spaces with a variety of architectural styles.

Hacia el Este de la ciudad se encuentra un área portuaria de gran relevancia, Puerto Madero. Esta zona conserva en sus edificaciones más cercanas a los diques un estilo arquitectónico propio del siglo XIX, la cual contrasta ampliamente con la arquitectura moderna de su zona más céntrica.
To the east of the city is a port area of great relevance, Puerto Madero. This area preserves in its buildings closer to the docks an architectural style typical of the nineteenth century, which contrasts sharply with the modern architecture of its central area.

Ubicado en el dique 3, se encuentra una obra emblemática de la ciudad, incluso tiene el privilegio de ser la única obra de su autor en toda América Latina, hablamos del Puente de la Mujer, una de las obras reconocidas del destacado arquitecto Santiago Calatrava.
El Puente de la Mujer es un puente peatonal construido entre los años 1998 y 2001. Su estructura está conformada por tres piezas de las cuales dos permanecen fijas y ancladas a los bordes este y oeste del dique, y un gran tramo central de longitud 102 metros que puede girar hasta un ángulo de 90° con la finalidad de dar paso a embarcaciones a través de las aguas del canal que atraviesa.
Located in dike 3, is an emblematic work of the city, even has the privilege of being the only work of its author in all Latin America, we speak of The Woman's Bridge, one of the recognized works of the prominent architect Santiago Calatrava.
The Woman's Bridge is a pedestrian bridge built between 1998 and 2001. Its structure is made up of three pieces, two of which remain fixed and anchored to the east and west edges of the dike, and a large central section of 102 meters long that can rotate up to an angle of 90° in order to allow boats to pass through the waters of the canal it crosses.

La estructura del puente está compuesta por concreto armado con una cubierta de madera propia de la región. El tramo central del puente gira sobre un gran cimiento cónico por medio de un mecanismo pivotante, y posee un gran mástil inclinado de 39 metros de largo que sostiene por medio de cables de acero al gran tramo giratorio del puente.
The bridge structure is made of reinforced concrete with a wooden deck typical of the region. The central span of the bridge rotates on a large conical foundation by means of a pivoting mechanism, and has a large 39-meter long inclined mast that supports the large rotating span of the bridge by means of steel cables.

Tengo entendido que el tramo central del puente tiene la capacidad de girar en un lapso de 2 minutos, lamentablemente esto no lo pude presenciar.
La forma que representa este puente es el de una pareja de bailarines de tango, baile propio de Argentina. El mástil inclinado representa al hombre y el tablero semi arqueado del puente es la mujer sostenida por su pareja.
El Puente de la Mujer se llama así en honor a las damas heroínas de Argentina, cuyos nombres pueden ser vistos en las calles adyacentes al puente en esta maravillosa zona de Buenos Aires. Honor a quien honor merece. La arquitectura es un medio para resaltarlo.
I understand that the central span of the bridge has the capacity to turn in a span of 2 minutes, unfortunately I was not able to witness this.
The shape that represents this bridge is that of a couple of tango dancers, a dance typical of Argentina. The inclined mast represents the man and the semi-arched deck of the bridge is the woman held by her partner.
The Woman's Bridge is named in honor of the heroine ladies of Argentina, whose names can be seen on the streets adjacent to the bridge in this wonderful area of Buenos Aires. Honor to whom honor is due. Architecture is a means to highlight it.

Cabe destacar que este puente fue prefabricado en territorio español, específicamente en Vitoria, País Vasco, y su traslado hasta Argentina se efectuó por partes para su posterior ensamblaje.
No duden en visitar este maravilloso espacio si en alguna oportunidad tienen el placer de visitar la gran ciudad de Buenos Aires en Argentina. Pueden visitarlo de día o de noche y disfrutar de una amplia gama de opciones gastronómicas.

It is worth mentioning that this bridge was prefabricated in Spain, specifically in Vitoria, Basque Country, and its transportation to Argentina was done in parts for its subsequent assembly.
Do not hesitate to visit this wonderful space if you ever have the pleasure of visiting the great city of Buenos Aires in Argentina. You can visit it day or night and enjoy a wide range of gastronomic options.

Hello @darwinperez. That's such an incredibly impressive bridge. To me, it simply resembles a Harp, a musical instrument where the exposed strings are playfully strummed by the artist. A magnificent work of engineering indeed.
