Mount Everest rises to new height of 8848.86 meters!

Nepal and China have announced that Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain, has risen by about one meter to 8,848 meters. The two countries have now agreed on a new height of 8848.86 meters (29032 feet) above Mount Everest. This change is a slight increase in Nepal's previous statistics, but it is four meters higher than the previous height recognized by China.

China and Nepal have agreed on this new height after surveying their respective parts of the mountain in 2019 and 2020. Debate over the actual height of the peak has intensified in recent years, with fears that the mountain may have shrunk following an earthquake in 2015. There were also differences over whether or not to add snow to the mountain peak.

Earlier, Nepal's Mount Everest was 8848 meters high while China recognized it as 8844.43 meters because it did not include an ice cap.

Teams have been measuring the mountain for decades due to a dispute between China and Nepal over the actual height of the mountain, named after former British India Surveyor General George Everest. After an expedition by the Indian team in the 1950s, the majority recognized the height of the mountain at 8848 meters.

Despite conflicting surveys over the decades, cartographers used the same figures until the late 1990s. In 1987, Italian experts declared the mountain's height to be 8872 meters. According to U.S. survey in 1999, using GPS technology declared the peak height to be 8850 meters with an error margin of two meters. This new height was widely recognized around the world.

Then, in 2005, during a Chinese expedition, the rocky surface of the mountain was set at 8,844.43 meters - Nepal's figures were slightly higher, including "snow heights."

Now this consensus has ended the dispute between China and Nepal. The peak of Everest divides the border between the two countries. Chinese President Xi Jinping said that the two sides are committed to protecting Everest and its surroundings and cooperating in scientific research.

During these years, not only has the height of Mount Everest changed, but its structure has also changed. In 2017, a British climber reported that a rock, considered the last obstacle in the way of a peak, had collapsed, making it potentially more dangerous for climbers trying to reach the world's highest peak.

The 'Hillary Step', named after Sir Edmund Hillary, who first climbed the route with Tenzing Norgay in 1953, is thought to have collapsed during the 2015 earthquake. Located on the southeastern coast of Nepal, the 12-meter-wide rock is considered to be the most technically difficult part of the summit.

Climbers suspect the quake changed the shape of the mountain, but heavy snow makes it difficult to estimate how much it has changed. President Xi Jinping stressed that this year marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Nepal. As a result of joint efforts, bilateral political trust has increased and the construction of "The Belt and Road" is being taken further.

Everest is said to be the highest mountain in the world just above sea level. Ecuador's Mount Chamburazo is the highest peak in space from the center of the planet. The height from the top of Mount Maunai in the US state of Hawaii to the base of these two mountains (Everest and Chamborizi) is higher, but because most of it is under the sea, it is not considered the highest mountain.
