It is time to think green and fight against global warming!

Global warming is defined as likely increase in the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere and oceans. In the 20th Century, the average temperature of earth increased by 0.6°C.

Earth’s atmosphere is mixture of gases which have surrounded the earth. These gases are called the greenhouse gases which include carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxides. These gases have ability to trap the heat and make the earth warm. Otherwise the earth would be too cold for us to live. However, when these gases increase in the atmosphere, the earth becomes too hot. This overheating of the Earth due to surplus of these gases is called Global Warming.

The term global warming is often used instead of the term climate change, however these are two different terms. The global warming is due to emission of greenhouse gases while climate change refers to change in the state of climate due to changes in temperature & precipitation rate of earth.

Global warming is most widely discussed topic and it could ultimately lead to end of existence on planet Earth. Its warming effects are also affecting climatic conditions and crops, rising sea levels and melting of icecaps. There are two major effects of global warming. First, it is predicted that earth temperature would rise to about 3° to 5° C by 2100. Second, this temperature rise would likely raise sea levels by about 25 meters.

The primary effects of global warming are increasing temperatures. Due to increase in temperature, sea levels are increasing leading to flooding coasts and low lying islands. The glaciers are melting rapidly and snowfall patterns have also changed across the world. Due to this rise in temperature, many species of plants and animals are going to extinct. Due to thermal expansion of the ocean, the sea levels are rising. The average intensity and duration of hurricanes has also increased since 1975.

There are many steps which we can implement to reduce the damaging effects of global warming. Some of these steps are briefly discussed below:

1. We should use fluorescent bulbs in our home and work place instead of standard incandescent bulbs. These bulbs consume less electricity and give the same amount of light.

2. We should replace our old electronic appliances with energy efficient appliances. These may include stoves, refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners. Normally there is energy efficiency sticker on these appliances and these can be easily identified.

3. We should reduce our usage of electricity. We should make sure that lights are turned off when not in use.

4. We should save water by installing water saving shower heads and faucets. In this way we can save half of water. It is simple way to cut down the cost of water and fight against global warming.

5. We should learn to recycle. There is recycling program in every community. Recycling paper, plastics, glass products and metals can cut down the pollutant gases that are released at landfill sites. We should also buy the products which are made from recycling materials.

6. We should plant some trees. Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere when forests are destructed because trees absorb carbon dioxide.

7. We should use public transport instead of personal cars. It will cut down the harmful car emission which are released into atmosphere.

Global warming has become a serious threat for our planet. We should think green to reduce the threat of global warming. We should plant more and more trees. One tree absorbs one ton of carbon dioxide during its life span. We should also adopt the habit to save more and more water. On an average, a person who leaves the tap running while brushing his teeth, wastes 07 litres of water. These small acts, such as switching off unnecessary lights or using energy efficient appliances, can save our planet from heating up.

“Alone, we can make a difference; together, we can change the world.”

During Earth Hour on 31st March 2007, around 2.2 million people altogether switched off their lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to help fight global warming. It saved the energy and prevented the release of 24.68 tons of carbon dioxide in single one hour.

Trees are very helpful in fighting against global warming. They release oxygen which is vital for survival of living things on earth. They absorb carbon dioxide which is hazardous greenhouse gas. In this way trees play an important role in protecting the earth from climatic changes. So when a tree is cut down, the carbon stored in it is released into atmosphere. It is happening on large scale through deforestation where huge quantities of CO2 are released into atmosphere.

Go ahead, think green, plant a tree, and fight against global warming.

Hello @munawar1235 a very interesting topic global warming, other of the forms that generate large amounts of greenhouse gases is through agriculture, through the excessive use of pesticides and livestock, currently some industries are trying to reuse carbon dioxide are trying some methods to achieve, hopefully if they can achieve for the good of mankind.

Greetings!

one of the positive things about this pandemic is that the cars stopped running, the refineries lowered their production and according to an article the hole in the ozone layer closed, so this pandemic was a blessing to the planet

Dear @munawar1235

I'm glad to see you posting within our PH community again. However, I would need you to check out our previous comment at your previous publication.

I've noticed, that you do not really engage with your audience? I wonder if you even read received comments?
