Antarctica's ice is melting rapidly and it could result in flooding coastal cities

A few months ago, the US space agency NASA released new images of the frozen continent of Antarctica, which show an alarmingly rapid melting of ice there. The images are from Eagle Island, an island in Antarctica, taken from a satellite on February 4 and 13, respectively.

The photographs show that there is drastic rise in melting of ice within period of just nine days. In the photograph taken at 13th February, massive portion of ground is visible, which was previously covered with snow few days ago.

Experts say that so far most of the melting of ice from ground poles has been at the North Pole (Arctic), but in this case the South Pole (Antarctica) was considered relatively safe, but now the effects of rising world temperatures are beginning to be felt there as well.

It should be noted that when it is cold at the North Pole, it is summer on the South Pole. That is, summers are now taking place at the South Pole.

The average temperature in the central parts of Antarctica is -57⁰C, while the average temperature in the coastal areas is -10⁰C. In summer, the temperature rises to close to 0⁰C, but over time, summer temperatures in Antarctica are also rising.

"I haven't seen melt ponds develop this quickly in Antarctica," Professor Pelto,a glaciologist at Nichols College, told NASA.If you think about this one event in February, it isn’t that significant. It’s more significant that these events are coming more frequently."

The previous record for the hottest in Antarctica was 17.5⁰C, set on March 24, 2015. But on February 6 this year, a new record of 18.3⁰C was set, which was 1.2⁰C higher than the previous record.

Massive forest fires in Australia have intensified the heat wave, which has spread to Antarctica. Images released by NASA show that a warmer-than-normal circle is still present near Antarctica, affecting the coastal areas of this icy continent.

These images show that the melting of ice in Antarctica, like in the Arctic, is accelerating, which means that the frozen ice at the poles and mountain peaks may melt much earlier than our previous estimates.

If that happens, experts say, sea levels will rise to 230 feet higher than they do today, drowning all the world's coastal cities. And it is very difficult for us to imagine the devastation it will bring.

it really is very worrisome that global warming is leading to this possible disaster. We must become aware and start taking care of our environment.I think it is necessary to invest in companies that help the environment and are ecological, we need a new, much healthier model of life.

Greetings friend.

It is a worrying issue which is taking us global warming so many disasters, so I continue to insist that you take awareness of the damage we are causing begin to take care of our spaces we can change time to think not only for us but for future generations can enjoy a healthy environment safe and ecologically balanced.

Thank you for sharing this important information.

Hello @munawar1235.

Worrying news that you share with us in this opportunity regarding one of the consequences of global warming and with it the ice of Antarctica is melting quickly and as you express this could cause floods in the coastal cities a very worrying aspect for those inhabitants.

Yes. You can see the difference in two photographs, how quickly ice is removed.
