What is the atom made of?/¿De qué está compuesto el átomo?

During our first years of studies they taught us how atoms are made up of a nucleus in which protons (charge +) and neutrons (charge 0) are housed and some particles that orbit this nucleus called electrons and negatively charged.

If we go a little deeper into the subject we will see that in an atom we can find two basic types of subatomic particles: "fermions" and "bosons".
Fermions, named after the physicist Enrico Fermi, form the basis of matter itself and can in turn be of two types: quarks and leptons.

The quarks are the particles of which the protons and neutrons that make up the nucleus are made, each of these particles is made up of 3 quarks. Leptons are another type of sub-atomic particle, among which are electrons.

The other group of elementary particles are the bosons, named after the physicist Satyendra Nath Bose, they have no mass and are the carriers of the forces that the atom needs to function as it does.

These bosons have different names depending on the force to which they are bound:

  • Photons: they are the carriers of the electromagnetic force that makes the electron stay around the nucleus and change its orbit.

  • Gluons: carriers of the strong nuclear force that holds the particles in the nucleus and the quarks that form them together.

  • Bosons W and Z: these are the carriers of the weak nuclear force, responsible among other things for the radioactivity of some elements.

For the fourth missing force of nature, which is gravity, it is easy to think that there should be a carrier boson, the "graviton", but at the moment none have been detected experimentally.

This has really been a very brief summary, as soon as you dig a little more, lots of particles appear with very complicated names and characteristics, but it is good to start.

i really remembered back then in school, they use to let us know that atom is the smallest indivisible unit of an element, gone are the days, lolz

And in some 20 years they will find even more things inside the f****** atom. ;-D

Hello @mauromar
The truth is that these issues are complex. But interesting. Many find it difficult to visualize that this exists, and what remains is logic.
Elements will continue to be discovered as technology advances. What has been discovered is what the tools available so far and the human mind has allowed.

I think this has no end, the deeper you go the most things you discover.
