Greetings my dear members of the community of @project.hope, continuing with the socialization of technological contents applied in the preservation and environmental care, in this opportunity we will approach the controlled chemical reactions as mechanism in the reduction of carbon dioxide present in the terrestrial atmosphere, which is the responsible for the global warming, the photochemical smog, the acid rain, among others.

Chemically, carbon dioxide (CO2) is a compound formed by carbon and oxygen atoms, its presence in nature is a normal process, although due to the use of cars, the burning of fossil fuels and the industrialization of cities, the levels of this gas have increased dramatically producing the environmental conditions we mentioned previously.

Although carbon dioxide is indispensable for the photosynthetic process of plants, it is the increase in carbon dioxide levels that represents a potential danger to planetary systems.

In this sense, the team of investigators of the University of California has developed a mechanism that allows to generate ethylene from the carbon dioxide present in the air, a chemical reaction with many projections in favor of the environmental well-being since the obtained substance (ethylene) would enter to a new system or production gear like the plastic elaboration, leaving aside the use of hydrocarbons coming from the fossil fuels of our planet to achieve this task.

Fig. 4. Carbon dioxide is a determining factor in the process of plant photosynthesis. Author: RociH

In the opinion of Yu Huang, co-author of the study,
"We are on the verge of fossil fuel depletion, along with the challenges of global climate change, so implementing such measures to enable the development of materials that can efficiently convert greenhouse gases into value-added fuels and chemical feedstocks is a critical step in mitigating global warming while avoiding the extraction of increasingly limited fossil fuels”.

Although the reaction is somewhat slow, the researchers managed to do so and use a copper catalyst, packaged in the form of micro-scale nanowires that increase the speed of the process surprisingly, which represents in added value to the invention since it can be replicated at an industrial level.

Undoubtedly, technological advances are increasingly promising and their application in environmental welfare makes the process more dynamic. Under this premise, I would like to know your comment on the implementation of this type of research work.

Hi @madridbg

It is unquestionable that the levels of carbon dioxide represent a potential danger to the planet. The type of technologies that are developed as a mechanism to transform CO2 into plastic would undoubtedly contribute to reducing the enormous amount of carbon dioxide that is constantly being discharged by industrial activities. Thank you for socializing this type of content.
