It's a viable option, and in my experience it also has a much broader library than, say, YouTube Music (which is funny as one would expect the former to provide the underpinnings for the latter; and yet, certain specific songs can be found on YouTube but not on YT Music). I guess it's a matter of distribution rights.
The downside obviously is resource consumption: by listening to music on YouTube a lot of bandwidth is wasted as it will stream video no matter what, and the mobile app keeps your device display always on which in turn drains the battery for nothing; on top of that, one obviously can't put YouTube in the background. There are several compromises to accept.

As a matter of fact, I am planning to write a post about the deficiencies of YouTube Music when dealing with an existing personal collection of music.
