Are we programmed to discard technology?

Some years ago I read two words that caught my attention, and left me thinking, now I want to bring this discussion to this platform.

This is something that we live with every day and without realizing it we are caught up in it, or at least many don't realize it, or it is something that has become so commonplace that it is now the Normal. Decades ago, when our grandparents were young, they bought some household items, and even tables, beds, radio players that are still in good condition or at least what is electric or electronic, still work. An example of this are many record players and typewriters that are still working perfectly...

But for a few years they have been manufacturing most things under a concept of low durability, although it is very true that now they are more elegant or practical also have a specific time of duration, this is what they call Programmed Obsolescence...

It is also called planned obsolescence, but what is this?, I will define it in a very simple way:

"It means reducing the life of a product to increase the consumption of newer versions. "Source

As the concept says, the idea is that they buy more of this product, that they need to keep up with the latest innovations. This is something you see very frequently with phones, this is characteristic of this technological area. **Or has it not happened to you that a new phone comes out and you want to buy what brings some new possibilities of use, maybe you are not going to use them all, but you feel the need to have it. And in a certain way there comes a time when you have to, because even the applications that are updated do it for the new model and it's getting totally out of date from every point of view that you have.

This is an excellent marketing strategy, for companies it works perfectly because it guarantees a permanent rotation of their inventory and a substantial increase of their profits. But, the truth is that this is what has led to an increasingly pronounced consumerism, in which most people say they buy it because they wanted to buy it, however the reality is that psychologically it directly affects all the advertising work that the company promoting the product does and achieves its goal by making people buy what (supposedly) they need.

The other really important thing is that it is harmful to the world since in general the batteries of many electronic devices, and these same products have in their structure many components that are often harmful not only to health but to the environment. If we consider the amount of batteries and other devices that are discarded daily, is to be surprised with the level of pollution that is created from this waste.

The causes of this behavior are diverse, in addition to the component psychological that has to be permanently seeing new releases is also that there are other things to consider, one of them is that the replacements for certain article disappear, companies stop making them to give priority to the new, which leads indisputably to you have to discard the one you have and buy a new one.

In addition, some components are made to last a specific time, for example the batteries of smartphones.

As you can see, there are many nuances to this issue, however, it seems that it is already a norm within our society and fighting against it is a bit difficult.

For now I'm done with this publication.

In advance Grateful for your reading and comments.

I remember perfectly my first phone, a very good NOKIA by the way, but as you say they went down in history, nowadays the fashion is androids and iphones. Many of us say, I don't buy it because I want to and it's certainly not like that, it's because society forces us to do that, as you say the psychological thing there is important, "how can I not have the new phone" EVERYONE HAS IT!

It is something that many times we can not control hehe and I include, I do not have the latest model because I do not have the money, but surely would be in my hands, so that lie!

"I do not have the latest model because I do not have the money"

I know he he he he

But we can realize with that that not having the new phone is not something to die for, we can live quietly like that. It's the same for everyone with clothes, and many other things. Thanks for commenting @franyeligonzalez.
