The most inspirational day of the year

Hello my fellow bloggers! Today I want to congratulate you with one of the most amazing holiday for the entire humanity - International Day of Human Space Flight (or “Yuri's Night” or “Cosmonautics Day”). For me this is the most inspirational day. On this day, 60 years ago on 12 April 1961 humanity forged its road to stars. The oldest dream of humanity came true.

Humanity dreamed of stars since the very beginning of civilization. Countless generations of people looked at the night skies. Ancient cultures of Egypt, China, South and Central America made astronomy the vital part of their understanding of life. The dream grew stronger as generations of scientists devoted their life to explore the universe. Finally, on this glorious day the Vostok 3KA space capsule was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome. Humanity entered a new era. We don’t look at space exploration as miracle anymore. GPS in your mobile phone doesn’t look exiting. Yet we still dream of space.

If you don’t find this magnificent achievement of humanity inspirational enough, look at the first man in space himself. Yuri Gagarin was born in the village of Klushino in the middle of nowhere. His father was a carpenter and mother a milkmaid. His family barely survived Nazi occupation in World War II. He worked at Steel Plant when he was 16 years old and later studied tractors in Saratov Industrial Technical School. How many perspectives in life can have a boy from a distant village born in poor family? Yuri’s story tells us that despite of all obstacles we decide our own fate and our achievements can be truly unlimited if we work hard enough to fulfil our dreams. Gagarin made his path from a poor farm boy to become an international celebrity and a world hero.

Gagarin made his flight during the cold war, yet this achievement was celebrated by the entire world. He visited Italy, Germany, Canada, Brazil, Japan, Egypt, Finland and the United Kingdom three months after the Vostok 1 mission. The whole world was celebrating and for this short period of time Cold War stepped back. Sergei Korolev, one of the masterminds behind the early years of the Soviet space program, later said that Gagarin possessed a smile "that lit up the Cold War".

I find this extremely inspirational. Any of us has more life changing opportunities than he had. If he could accomplish the journey from the farm to the otter space, what stops you from achieving your goals?

Today I want you to shout his famous "Поехали!" (Poyekhali!—Let's go!), and applicate the hard work all scientists and engineers from all over the world are doing to fulfil our space goals.
