Venezuelan Education in times of Pandemic: Strength/Weaknesses

The World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 as a global public health emergency on January 30, 2020, this declaration brought with it that many aspects of daily life had to change, including educational systems which suffered a great impact on students, teachers and educational institutions at all levels worldwide, causing schools, colleges and universities to close their doors in order to comply with the distancing measures to preserve health.

Due to the aforementioned, moving smoothly from a conventional learning system to a virtual and distance learning system is not an easy task, since this violent change is linked to other factors and challenges that each country has. As nobody knows precisely when this pandemic will disappear, educational institutions decided to use all their technical resources to be able to create totally online learning material.

Based on the above, the Venezuelan educational system does not escape from this reality and on March 13, 2020 the Venezuelan State under Decree No. 4,160 decrees the state of alarm due to the pandemic, this in order to take all urgent and necessary measures for the protection of the population. This caused all educational institutions in the country to close their doors as of the date described above, and at the same time, guidelines were issued to educational institutions to prepare them to approach a distance learning system.

Distance education, although it has its positive points, is currently full of many challenges and obstacles in many countries and especially in Venezuela, continuing learning in this way and not attending classrooms where physical and human resources are used can be ineffective and not yield the expected results. The problems of some basic services in Venezuela such as internet access and constant power failures have become the main obstacles that Venezuelan students have faced.

These very specific problems that Venezuelan students are going through at all levels force us to ask the following questions: Do the necessary technical resources exist to carry out distance learning? Are teachers motivated and prepared to face this new challenge? Will homes have the minimum conditions to support teachers from home?

Talking about Venezuelan education in times of pandemic is a utopia, a fraud of gigantic proportions where parents become superheroes in order to save their children from the darkness of a system that is shipwrecked due to hyperinflation and the poor assessment made by the state and private institutions to teachers, who in addition to being in extreme economic conditions must teach classes without having the necessary technology for them. The virus is insignificant in the face of the reality of education in this country. It is only worth mentioning that the monthly salary of those who earn the most money according to the salary scale is barely enough to buy a kilo of meat.

Greetings @joseph1956, very accurate your comment our education has decreased its quality, apart from that the salaries of educators are far below what it should be therefore each teacher of any educational level must manage to solve their day to day.
Thank you for your contribution to this article.

Greetings my dear @carlir, if we analyze the events that have been taking place we realize that the Covid-19 was only the trigger to a situation that had been brewing with the evolution of the days in our country (Venezuela), in this sense and responding to your statements I dare to say that we do not have a solid technological structure that allows us to address education in these times of pandemic and how to forget the de-motivation of teachers by an issue of salary interest. Thank you for your contribution to the PH community

Greetings my dear friend @madridbg, unfortunately it is a reality that we Venezuelans are living in our day to day, but also this situation has given us the opportunity to show that we are able to face any adversity, I have no doubt that we will get out of this situation.
Thank you for your contribution my friend.

My dear friend @carlir, I am afraid that of the three questions you ask at the end, I can answer all three with a single answer, we are not prepared to face a distance education, and all for the simple fact that services such as electricity and internet are bad.

Greetings my dear professor and thank you for sharing your concerns at the national educational level.

One of the challenges of education in Venezuela is the lack of connection, for thousands of Venezuelans to have access to the internet is not something easy to achieve due to the lack of a stable and quality service, not to mention how expensive a computer is, this reality makes it difficult for the average student to develop their skills.

Hello @carlir!
I believe that this country was not prepared to take on the challenge of teaching at a distance, however, we are working as best we can. It is an extremely difficult situation for both teachers and students. Particularly I find it very difficult because of the connection problems and especially the motivation given the circumstances. Greetings!
