Do Tiger-Fish and Hippo-Fish Get Along? A Collage for LMAC #77

shaka 77 beach 50.jpg

It would appear from my collage, created for LMAC #77, that tiger-fish and hippo-fish do get along. At least they do in my mythical universe. However, in the 'real' world, the tiny 'hippo fish' (otherwise known as the flamboyant cuttlefish) is not such an agreeable creature. Nor is the tigerfish

The Flamboyant Cuttlefish (The Hippo-Fish)

Check out this YouTube video of the flamboyant cuttlefish in action:

According to the Dallas World Aquarium, it is not know for certain if the bite and ink of the flamboyant cuttlefish are toxic. Research is being done to see if they are poisonous. However, the flesh of this fish is poisonous. It is a skillful hunter, with eight arms that are equipped with tentacles and suckers. Because of its small size (2.4-3.1 inches, not including tentacles), its prey is small animals.

This cuttlefish probably earned the title 'flamboyant' because of its ability to change color. It changes color for camouflage when hunting prey, and when eluding predators. It is thought that the more vivid colors displayed are a warning to predators that its flesh is toxic.

The Tigerfish, a Toothsome Hunter

New Guinea Tiger Fish (Datnioides Campbelli)

If you are looking for a companionable tank mate in your aquarium, this fish is not a good candidate. The New Guinea tigerfish is quite aggressive. If it meets anything half its size, it will likely make a meal of its new companion. These fish like to ambush their prey, and will hide behind plants in order to leap out at anything that passes by, even if it is not dinner.

There are other species of tigerfish. The one pictured below, Hydrocynus Vittatus, is at least as ferocious as the New Guinea tigerfish.

According to Wikipedia, though this animal consumes mostly fish, it has been known to leap out of the water and seize barn swallows in flight. The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service describes its range: "sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Ethiopia, and south to South Africa.”

The Wildlife Service also describes the maximum 'published' weight of this freshwater fish as 28 kilograms. The Hydrocynus Vittatus is, according the Fish and Wildlife Service, "One of the largest and most fearsome predatory fish species found in Africa’s freshwater rivers".

When it comes to ferocious, though, maybe this critter takes the cake. According to Animal Planet, this fish, which may be found in the fresh waters of the Congo River, may reach a weight of 154 pounds. It eats small crocodiles and has been known to attack humans. Here's a close-up of its teeth:

It would seem, from what we've learned about the hippo-fish and the tiger-fish, that they would not be dining companionably in real life :))

My Collage

I tried making a process GIF, as @quantumg does. Unfortunately, my process is so chaotic that the GIF makes no sense. Mind you, I left out more than half the steps :)) But here is the GIF, if you want a chuckle:

My elements all came from @shaka's original beautiful picture:

Hello friend, @redheadpei,
I can't control the world, but I can make peace in my collage :)

Thank you for liking my little critters. They were fun to play with. I hope your week is great. BTW: the nurse who gave me my vaccine said to drink a lot of water. It cuts down on side effects (that's what she said, anyway).

Thank you @dwixer, my friend. Yes, a party for imaginary animals. Why not? And I don't think there are ever clouds in the sky there, either :)
Thank you for your good wishes.

Hello friend @agmoore excellent the review of the fish, incredible is a fish that can be eaten, it comes out of the water and eats some birds, here in my country there is a very small fish called Caribe found in the Orinoco river They are extremely carnivorous and dangerous, these animals that fall there are quickly eaten by fish. The gif the images must have the same size so that it is better. Good luck in the contest.

I looked up the Caribe. We call them piranha here. I guess it's one type of piranha. Every time I read about the Orinoco, I think of mysterious and ancient cultures. It is a river around which great historic events have flowed, and even before that, great prehistoric events. It has played a central in stories, and in the imagination. This stream of thought happens every time I read about the Orinoco :))

Thank you for your kind words and support my friend. It was wonderful for me to read about fish that are so exotic they almost don't seem real.

I wish you very good luck tonight. Peace and good health to you and your family, @cetb2008 .

This is as always a very educational and interesting edu collage. I enjoyed reading it very much.
I love these tiger fish and hippo fish. xD They are just funny and it is a creative representation of these slippery contemporaries. :-D

Well done and good luck! :-)

Thank you my friend. My imagination never fails me :) I've never worried about people 'stealing' my ideas, because there are so many of them! The problem is, making the ideas a reality :))

I appreciate your visit and support, as always.

Haha, I love this whimsical collage and as always, with a touch of science in it! Cuttlefish are so fascinating to look at. They really do look like small mutated hippos. Watching National Geographic or Discovery was one of my favourite things as a child and I feel like there's a little bit of those elements in this collage. I personally loved the gif! It's a good thing to add to this contest, to show the process. And I always enjoy it when the maker's process is a bit haphazard.

Hello my friend 🌼

If you like haphazard, you will love my creative process. Very little I do starts out linear. In the end I hope for logic, insist on it, but on the way it is all chaos :))

Thank you for liking my blog. It is such a pleasure to get lost in this activity. Sometimes I let important stuff wait because I'm involved in realizing an idea.

So great to see you back in action with such energy and talent. Good luck in the contest.

In the end I hope for logic, insist on it, but on the way it is all chaos :))

You know of this famous architect, MIes Van Der Rohe who advocated for "Less is More"? There's a whole bunch of us now who don't believe in the grid-lock city systems and saying that life doesn't plan itself out in neat iron-grids. So there's a counter "Mess is More" group of architects out there who believe that cities are meant to be chaotic but it is finding order within that chaos is what makes for a good place. Your comment makes me think of that!

I've been looking at pictures of 'less is more' since I read this comment. I have to say that when I decorate (I don't decorate, ever) less is more probably characterizes the style (lack of style). When my husband first saw my apartment, which I shared with my mother, he was stunned. There was virtually no furniture. It never occurred to me to buy furniture :)) However, I do appreciate architecture, and rooms, that reflect organic development, that reveal something about the creator. (I guess my apartment revealed a lot about me!)

Thanks for the lesson on style and architecture.

Have a great, creative, productive day my friend.

Hi,

ah I do not know the fish in your collage, but anything with cats and tigers is beautiful. And if it's a pink cat it's cool.

vote for your collage good luck in the finals

When I make a collage I might as well have nice thoughts. Tigers and cats do that:)

Thank you very much for your visit and for your kind words.

Dear @agmoore, I laughed so hard seeing the details of your collage....
Your post is. as always, very good, and as always, I discover things I didn't know. The tiger fish is amazing, but I am captivated by your coffee drinking beach tiger fish... hahaha.....
Orchids are a charm, then on your beach there are orchid palm trees.
The colors are great, somewhat shocking, as befits a good cartoon.
I was missing something like that. It's very stressful days around here.
A big hug. Take care of yourself.

Thank you for laughing! I chuckled myself as I brought these creatures from my imagination. It's wonderful to see them take shape.

I"m afraid I tore up @shaka's photo a bit, but I kept the parts that brought me pleasure. The most benign remedy for stress in my life is to indulge my imagination and play with LMAC.

I appreciate your visit and your very kind words.

Lovely and peaceful outing. I wonder if they accept humans too? I love the beach and would hate to miss out.

Thanks for sharing your collage and the information on the species of fish.
