Out With The Old, Please Dad

Growing up, I've always known my dad to be attached to everything he ever bought in the house. The chairs, TVs, CD/DVD player, basically every appliance you'd consider old school. We moved houses a couple years back and my dad still found a way to move with some of these very old properties. He was very upset when he couldn't find his vinyl player and music plates, the least we could have kept after forcing him to do away with the black and white TV. I was born in '95 and yes, I used a black and white TV as a kid. When others upgraded to CD players, my dad was still very much into his video cassette player. He was and still kind of resistant to change.

I think all of these old stuff could have been sold off before they became entirely outdated because now we have a bunch of stuff no one uses and he still won't let go. Seriously dad, do we really need a CD player? The situation here is not even like the West where people appreciate antic, over here, it's just a bunch of old stuff of no value. Well, it's of great value to my dad and that's all that matters. I like letting my old man enjoy things even though my mum finds it annoying.

The chairs currently in the living room are the same ones I've known all my life. It's made of good wood but the fabric is worn out. I peed on this chair as a baby and my dad's grand-child seems to carry on my legacy these days. These chairs could easily have been replaced in the 25 years of my existence but no, not my overly attached dad doing away with his precious, best quality chairs. My dad's motto is probably, "if it ain't dead yet, why trash it?"

Last month end,one of his bank mobile apps stopped working and he was asked to update it. After updating the app refused to work. He had thought it was the poor network all along until yesterday when I explained to him that the new app isn't compatible with his phone's OS. He's been using this phone since 2016. It's a Lenovo phone running on Android 4.4.2 OS.

"What do you mean it's outdated? When did I buy it?"

Ummm...it's been four long years daddy 😄 He looked irritated that I thought his phone is outdated. He still thought I wasn't downloading and installing the app right so I sent the app to my other phone I don't use anymore. The app worked on the other phone and he had no choice than to accept his phone was indeed outdated. I had been trying to get him to use this other phone before yesterday but he wasn't interested. It's an Infinix phone with an Android 8 OS, although 3G but better than what he had.

Today his phone really stressed him out, it's very slow because of the 1gig RAM. I was really happy when he asked that I show him how to use the Infinix. A part of the screen is faulty but I work my way around using it and he caught up in no time with my little tricks. I'll get it fixed when the money is available but for now, I'm happy my dad opened up to a 'new' OS. He kept asking,

"What's this for?" "How do I do this?" "Is there a memory card?"

...And that's how I successfully convinced my dad to dump his old phone. Hopefully, this extends to those goddamn CD plates that don't even work no more...or not.

Oh dear.....the similarities between your dad and my dad keeps growing the more you reveal these stories!!!This is soooo my dad, except for the sitting room chairs....we still have the dinning table and its chairs, those guys are older than me, we still have the old TV's jampacked in a room, no one has turned them on in years, yeah the video cassette players too, omg. My Dad only recently changed his phone from a Samsung note 2 he bought years ago because of its numerous problems....my hope is that maybe somehow those TV's will turn out to become expensive because of their unique properties one day lol...wishful thinking. His idea is that one day they will become useful....I just can't fathom it....

Our dads are so alike 😁😁 we have these hunch back TVs too. Our TV stopped working recently beyond repairs. Guess what we're using right now? The old TV still works!
