Decent dude gets apprehended...By a decent dude

avatar

I would say that I'm a pretty decent guy, friendly, easy to get along with, trustworthy, honest and law abiding...

...OK, maybe not the last one...Let me explain.

Last night I was heading home from the monthly Adelaide steem meet up around 8:30pm and was a couple hundred metres from my driveway when I was surprised by red and blue flashing lights in the rear view mirror and the short bursts of a siren...The po po. That's right folks...I got pulled over directly in front of my house.

I brought the car to a stop, buzzed the window down and waited for the cop to come over hoping it was one of my cop-mates being a dick. It wasn't.

"Good evening sir, may I have your license please." He said sternly.

I fished out my drivers license and handed it over whilst wondering what crime I may have committed...Had they finally caught up with me for that time I stole some grapes from the greengrocer as a 5 year old? He took my license and...Handed it back seeming somewhat annoyed...I'd actually handed him my firearms license which looks almost identical to my drivers license. Smooth move Galen ya pelican. I rectified my mistake and he asked...

"Is this your car?"

I confirmed that it was and he proceeded with...

"The vehicle isn't registered and hasn't been for the last eleven days."

OK, it all became clear. At this stage though I was more worried about the penalty for driving an unregistered vehicle - Loss of drivers license. Considering I need to drive for work...Well, I wasn't feeling good.

I told the cop in my most innocent-sounding voice that I was sure it had been renewed and he seemed happy to give me the benefit of the doubt. He said he would run it again and asked that I check on my Ezyreg app to see for myself...I did so, finding it a little difficult to concentrate with the flashing of red and blue lights in my rear view...Checking checking checking...

Fucking fuckety fuckery fuck stickery fucking fuck...Not registered.

The cop came back over and questioned my findings with an upraised eyebrow...I had little choice but to tell him that is was indeed unregistered. OK, now I was fucked. He nodded and indicated his second running of my plate confirmed the same.

"We looked at you twice as you were zipping around back there. These are 50kph streets and you need to slow down." He said sternly.

I nodded...As innocently as I could figuring nothing I could say would aid the situation.

"Where do you live?" A funny question considering he had my license in his hand.

I pointed to my house literally 10 metres away.

His face seemed to relax a little and...Is that a little understanding creeping into his visage, a slight smile?

"I'm going to send you a warning notice." He said bluntly, and the relief on my face must have been visible. "You need to slow down around here, and you need to register the vehicle by close of business tomorrow," he went on to say in his straightforward cop manner.

I committed to having it registered by that evening and thanked him for his understanding.

"Have a good night sir," he said passing over my drivers license. He walked to his vehicle, an unmarked vehicle, and took off...I watched him go, now indistinguishable as a police vehicle as the lights were off.

With a shake of my head I pressed the start button, swung the wheel and turned into my driveway.

I was fortunate on this occasion. Losing my drivers license would lose me my job, no doubt, and that's not something I would be very pleased about. It was my fault the vehicle was not registered, or Faith's although I didn't blame her - A lack of communication I guess. I was just grateful that cop was a decent dude and realised he was dealing with another decent dude who made a small mistake...Like an idiot.

So, what I want to know is what's your criminal past. Well, maybe don't disclose all the facts, especially if you are indeed a criminal...But have you guys ever had a run-in with the law like this? How did it turn out? What happened? Share your story in the comments if you feel inclined. Extra points will be rewarded if the story makes me laugh.

I wonder if there were a few unmarked cars around last night. One passed us on the way back up Main North Road with its lights going, followed quickly by a marked one.

Now that we don't have the stickers on the windscreen, I often worry that the reminder might get lost on its way and there's no quick easy way to check when it's due. Maybe I need to put my own reminders in place.

This one was a grey Toyota Kluger, like a soccer mum car. Buggers. Still, I was probably doing 60 in a 50 and my car was unregistered so they're just doing their job. Was a bit dumb getting pulled over right in front of my house though. 😊

I considered leading them on a car chase...But didn't have enough petrol in the tank. 🙈

You are one lucky dog @galenkp, that decent cop po po thing doesn't happen too much anymore here in the states. The last time I got a break from a cop was when I got stopped doing 80 in a 55 heading to New Jersey to visit the kids.
I totally lied, told the officer , so sorry sir, I was distracted and in a hurry to see my family, I just heard some very bad news. "I am dying". I told him. With fingers crossed and tears in my eyes, I said to myself, yeah, dying to get the hell out of here. Sweet young man said, slow down mam. Thank you kindly sir. I still feel guilty about that one Hehe.

I know right? I think the lad took pity on this old boy. I was polite, calm and respectful which probably helped. He could have taken my drivers license from me for three months. Close call huh?

Batting the eye lids works for some ladies...Seems dying and some tears does too...Still, you weren't lying...You were dying to get out of there...And the fine. Lol.

Thanks for commenting. I hope FL is treating you warmly. :)

I was just seventeen, first car. Triumph TR4. One hundred and five horses under that hood. Did something stupid, saw the cop, his lights not on yet.
Zoom I’m off, down a side street shaped like a horseshoe. Flipped my lights off, petal to the metal. Thought he can’t catch me, scott free. How stupid, he had me within fifteen seconds. Shit. I looked fifteen, we spoke, guess he liked my spunk for damn he let me go. Lot more to story but heck it’s your post and this is just a side bar. You shook this out of my memory bank.
Respect

Haha, that's cool...You should do a Director's cut of that story. I reckon there's some intere6 elements there we could get some enjoyment from.

TR4 was a decent little car, pretty cool for a first car. Mine was a 1964 VW Beetle. (And not a cool one). Lol.

Thanks for joining in.

Being 18 years young at the time and driving a hotted up Morris mini just to set the scene. I was driving through the roundabout some 1.5 kilometres from home with lot's of traffic about with dual lanes. I had noticed a cop on a motorcycle waiting his turn to get out into that roundabout as I went past him. He looked at me and I thought this could be a problem 🤣. Keeping an eye on the rear view mirror I noticed he came out of the roundabout the 3rd vehicle behind me then he was in the lane next to me and moved in behind me😲. And you guessed it the party light's came on so I indicated to turn left at the next street also being the street I lived on ( This being a dead end dirt road with 4 properties on it). I thought do I just drive in or pull up outside? Pulled up some 10 metres from driveway and wait for Mr plod to come over.

First thing he said in a very stern voice what the hell did you come down here for were you trying to run from me🙄. I said no just going home and now you are wasting my time, were do you live he said nastily I responded just 10 meters over there. He said sure you do getting madder by the minute 🤣 yes that's true I said, SHOW ME YOU'RE LICENCE bla bla bla. Gave him said item he looks at it then looks at the house I pointed to and goes well at least you are actually being honest. I said why did you assume I was lying and no response to that😜. He then decide to spend a long time checking my car for fault's in the end he fined me one point and $30 for engine smoke😡. I knew he was not going to leave without some ticket writing as he must have had to fill his quota for the day and a trumped up fine it was to☹️. Furtunatly that's the only fine I have had and not a driving related one either 👍

Haha, he really think you'd drive into a dead end road to get away?

Sometimes I think cops just don't think too straight...Too worried filling quotas as you say.

Still, $30 bucks isn't too bad considering he could have defected you for probably a heap of (trumped up) things. I guess in those situations it can be easy to make snide remarks, especially as a young kid, although that'll never usually go down too well with Mr. Plod. Did you read @mattclark's comment here? He must have got the most assholiest cop in Adelaide!

Thanks for joining in mate. Good work.

Yep young and cocky lol though I still give them a hard time if they start out in an aggressive manner of if they violate traffic law's or one time trying to falsely accuse me of something I did not do. I stood my ground with two cops on that one as I knew they had no grounds for it and they let me go👍. Yes I just had a read of Matts reply.

Some cops are good, I think I got one of those, and they tend to reflect the attitude they are given by the person they've pulled over too. I was really hoping that cop last night was one of my mates dicking around...Wasn't to be. I got very lucky though.

Fortunately you got a decent one I have had some decent cops and I tell them they are doing a great job and I appreciate the way they conducted themselves. And on the other hand I let them know when they are being let's call it idiots. On another funny note I have driven a marked cop car on the road he'll good fun the reaction you get on some people's faces when the see the car🤣👍. We had the car in at work for repairs I might have had to do a test drive👍

I was pulled over for an RBT just South of Old Reynella on South Rd, by Senior Constable Peter Schultz from the Christies Beach police station. Blew zero and he waved me on.
The next day he visited my registered address, my parents' house; to let me know he ran my plates after I left, and the car came up as unregistered.
He gave my dad his number, and asked him to pass it along, so I could register the car and give him a call when it was done.
I registered the car; gave him a call, he asked where I was, and I told him.
He came around and threw the book at me for it. Had to go to court, lost my license for 3 days, permanent mark on my criminal record. It occurred to me later that if I'd just not called him he wouldn't have bothered or been able to chase it up.
Rego was out by 2 days.

Jeez! Was the cop a motorcycle cop? They usually do asshole stuff like that!

I dodged a bullet last night man. The cop had every right to book me and send me to court which would have resulted in a lost license, and probably job. I came inside, registered the car and thanked whomever was looking over me that it didn't end badly for me.

Uninsured and unregistered is one of there biggest earnings, ever speed camera and every traffic camera reads your plate and checks your rego. All the time.

Your the first I have heard off getting a warning.

I was pretty lucky. I tried to be extra nice in the hope he would be lenient. It obviously worked. I genuinely didn't know it was unregistered and maybe he saw the truth of that in my responses as I wasn't lying - I actually believed what I was saying. Anyway, I got off with a warning which he said he would have sent in the mail...I'll probably do a post about it when the letter arrives.

Yup very lucky I would say, I know people getting $1200 fines for the same offense.

I've been fined twice for being intoxicated as an underaged person (you know how it is, you see people drink alcohol in movies, series, in real life, and can't just wait until adulthood because drinking is so "punk rock").

And I've called the cops once myself because some big old drunk stranger was sleeping in front of the entrance to our apartment house so that I couldn't reach home after school. The cops came, got him in the car and left. Apparently he was a regular to them and they even had a nickname for him (can't remember if it was "Colonel" or "Corporal".. or any other military rank).

That old chestnut...Underaged intoxication. Well, it's fortunate that's not treated as a major criminal offence as the jails would be full of underage people! Lol.

I guess it's nothing that many others haven't done before you though and I guess, considering you confessed to your crimes, that we'll over look it. I'm sure, as a legal-aged-drinker, you recreated those moments a few times?

I hope the Colonel never caused you too much grief. I sometimes wonder who those old drunks used to be...I mean they started as someones kid and somewhere just went off the rails I guess...We have a few veterans who are similar. Makes me sad.

Thanks for playing along.

Yeah, I've been black-out drunk as a legal-aged but things have changed a lot. I didn't drink for a while when I was with child and breastfeeding and now that the kid's in kindergarten I drink alcohol once in a blue moon, very rarely. And in a way I've come to hate alcohol, too... because I'm currently still living with someone who doesn't know how to stop.

0

avatar

Ah ok...Well, I'm not much of a drinker to be honest. Sure, I have one or two here and there, but never get drunk. I've been drunk three times in my life, the last when I was 30 (20 years ago) and don't really think I'm missing out on much. I never really touched alcohol at all until I was 22. Just wasn't interested.

Some think all of the above to be really weird, but I don't care. I'm not one to bow to peer-pressure preferring to be my own man. It's not like I don't get the chance to drink, I just don't feel inclined to do so mostly. It's situational of course.

I find it admirable. More and more people should feel about alcohol the same way.
In great quantities it's bad for the health and breaks relationships. One or two pocals of wine on some social occasion is fine but drinking every day.. ugh.

Anyway, I'm glad the copper was understanding about the car and all. Forgetting stuff is only human. :)

Thank you, I believe my limited drinking of alcohol to be of benefit to me; It makes those occasions i drink a little more special.

Oh year, that bloody cop threw me a bone! Losing my licence for something dumb like that (or at all)...Wouldn't be cool. Fortune smiled upon me last night.

My main source of being pulled over was driving too fast, or riding my motorbikes too fast...Got caught twice in a day on my bike once. That was an expensive day. These days I drive pretty calmly. I only got their attention last night as they thought I was going too fast but had no real proof...Ran the plates and boom, not registered. Oh well. I got away with it that time. I won't make the mistake again.

40 years ago I flew 1000km to another city to purchase a car which I would then drive home. After leaving the dealership I accelerated up the highway on-ramp and then was immediately pulled over. The officer asked if I knew how fast I was going and I had to admit that I did not as this was the first time driving this car on the highway. I pointed over my shoulder to the sales paperwork on the back seat. He let me off with a warning. I do admit the most unnerving moment was looking at my friend in the passenger seat to see another officer standing in the window with his hand on his gun.

I can imagine that was unnerving. I've seen those videos of cops in the States pulling people over and whilst I suppose it's not all like that they certainly have their share of trouble. Getting shot at isn't a lot of fun and I can imagine how jumpy they may be.

We tend not to see that here, not that I'm aware anyway although many coos are very strict and to the point. I suppose it depends on who they pull over. I guess I'm a respectable guy so treat me that way. I have mates who are cops and they tell me stories though. Not a job I'd want to do...I'd probably night-stick people too much. Lol..

I was on a trip to a different state. I came upon a car going quite a ways under the speed limit so I passed him. Turned out it was an unmarked police car and he pulled me over.

I was a bit worried about how it started. He asked for my license, then started complaining about out of state licenses and how finding information on them was a pain.

He told me I was following too closely and that I needed to be a certain distance behind him based on speed. That calculated to about 1/4 of a mile, which is quite a bit farther than actually required/needed.

He told me I was getting a warning and sent me on my way so it could have been worse. I have never been sure why he actually pulled me over.

Seems like a bit of an excuse to pull you over in my opinion, although driving up close behind someone is not smart so I guess it depends how far behind you were. A 1/4 mile away though? 400 metres? Sounds like a lot! I'd say several car lengths would be legit. I think he was being a little over-cautious with that recommendation.

Anyway, who knows with cops. They do a pretty hard job though I think and see really only just looking out for us I guess. Mostly.

We were hangin' out killin' time waiting on some friends to show up for a night out. @pooky-jax laughed out loud, then said, "oh that's not good." So I had to ask....

Oh, you're a good lad huh? Well, I sort of expected someone who drives for a living to be on the straight and narrow.

Yeah, the water thing...Still raining here so I can't get back up to have another look...Was dark last night so I want to re-evaluate. I'll have a look on Sunday. I am pretty annoyed...The ceiling is still wet and it looks like the window blinds tracks will pull out from the soaked gyprok. (Plaster board you call it I think).

Oh well, life happens and we have to take the good with the bad.

Have a nice night out.

Yeah, fucking funny alright. My boxers were all plastered to me, rain pelting down, crawling around cursing...Wasn't my finest hour. It was almost dark by then, so my neighbours didn't get a show...If they were looking I would have dropped them draws and given them something to look at.

Over had quite a few. Lost my licence three times due to demerits for speeding. After seeing Motorcycle Cops on TV I realised just how easy we have it here in New Zealand.

I did blow exactly on the limit once which meant I basically got off Scott free but that was under a different limit.

The first few tickets I got the cops were all pretty cool and I NEVER be a dick. That just gets the book thrown at you so you’re not cool for mouthing off at a cop, just a complete moron.

I've had my share of tickets for speeding...Get's expensive.

I agree with you in that being a dick when pulled over won't get a person too far. It's crazy what some do when they are pulled over, how angry they get. Do the crime, do the time I guess huh?

I'm not much of a drinker so RBT's don't bother me...I like to drive fast though, but have curbed my enthusiasm in the last few years.

Thanks for chiming in.

P.s. I was in NZ last October, South Island. Spectacular place. Loved it and will be back.

Yeah, it's not smart I guess but good that it gave you a wake up call...So many don't change their ways and that affects everyone on the roads and off. I have a mate who is 61 and since he was 9 has had no use of his right arm and walks with a heavy limp...It just hangs limply. Was crossing the road at the lights as a 9 year old and was hit by a drink driver. Pretty sad as it ruined his whole life.

I don’t have a criminal record as such. I was charged once for “trespassing in a prescribed premises” at a local train station for crossing while the gates were coming down. It was clearly a revenue raising operation as the Adelaide Metro goons wearing all black had locked gates and were passing out fines for people who didn’t have tickets. I’d crossed when I did because I knew that they would take ages to check my ticket manually and miss the train for an appointment I had in another suburb.

It was the young girl behind who crossed after me who should have been their target, getting the undercover cop’s attention who pulled out her badge, but she just started crying and said something about telling her grandmother and she stormed off, uncharged.

I was told I was caught on camera, and a few days later there was a front page newspaper report about how that particular camera wasn’t actually recording anything. Coincidences are awesome.
$120 fines are not.

There's a lot of revenue-based fines handed out these fays. It's crazy, but is a sign of the times...The government need in one the same as all of us.

My issue the other night was an obvious opportunity for them to get a pile of money from me, but I got lucky...I didn't even have to cry like that young girl behind you. 😭
