The bottles have through all conceivable times been created in a number of different sizes and use of different designs and materials. The use of synthetic fabric, primarliy plastics, have increased sharply!

The first glass bottles are considered to be produced short time after that the glass-blowing pipe was discovered of the Phoenicians, and already in the Roman times the first colorless bottles were made. Despite the rapid development of glass art in the period forward to the 1600s, the manufacture of bottles was given little interest. A number of bottles for cosmetics and medicine were admittedly made, but the extensions were relatively small. Hence, brand extensions were used long time back in time, but there is especially much focus on it today, and the modern times we are perceiving coming from every angle and every country! In this period of time, bottles were relatively dissimilar both with regards to shape and to size.

During the 1600s, there came more speed in the development. With the help of Venetian glassworkers, the production was put into efforts in France and in England. The finished bottles were most used in relation to wine, first as decanters, and later on also for storage. In 1696, there were approximately 40 production places for bottles in England, and the annual production was three million units. The bottles which still were bulky and inelegant, was in this period manufactured manually using glass blowing tubes. However, one achieved greater uniformity as the shapes in which the bottles were inflated were adopted.

In the second half of the 1800s, started the transition to industrial production and industrial organization, and in 1906 the American Owen machine that formed the basis of the modern bottle industry! Hence, one could use any theory and any method for the principles of industrial organization to understand and to make the business life even better and stronger. The diffusion of the idea making bottles came up in enormously quantities, and the total production in Europe for some years was more than 50 billion units per year. The supply of raw materials does not represent a problem, as sand, soda and lime can be obtained in almost unlimited quantities. However, the production is relatively energy-intensive. In production, you are using the input factos as capital and labor, and one of them can be used intensively! But there are also other factors, like for instance the energy!

In many countries today, beer and mineral water are bottled. Today, there are many producers in the different national and international markets that are using boxes and plastic bottles. This is used for beer and mineral water as mentioned, and there is a special history and a special tradition for anything that is used to be placed in grocery stores for sale. Many countries are using bottles for wine and spirits. The first making of bottles of glass in Norway, was made at Nøstetangen Glasværk in Eiker in 1741. Since that year, several firms have started to use the similar production and the similar structure of making bottles of glass. And if we are examining the diffusion and the need for bottles wordwide, we find even more firms. But there is always the main problem of making the different revenues bigger than the costs. And that is always the philosophy of running business in the private atmospheres.
