The barometer is an equipment we have in our homes and our working places for measuring the air pressure. The air should not be too heavy or too light, but there is an appropriate way of living with just enough air pressure, and we measure the air and its appropriateness by using the barometer.

The word «barometer» is derived from the Ancient Greek: βάρος, romanized: báros meaning "weight", and Ancient Greek: μέτρον, romanized: métron meaning «measure».

Evangelista Torricelli is the inventor of the barometer, which is a device that can measure air pressure. He made the first barometer in Florence, Italy, in 1644. His invention has many modern uses, but barometers are especially important for weather monitoring and prediction. Therefore, many people use the barometer today, as a starting point for how the weather is today, and what the weather can be in the future. And many of us are talking about wind and weather in life, and that is also natural, since the weather determines our moods and minds and our ways of being. The nice weather implies good mood, and the bad weather implies bad mood! And research in different towns and cities around the globe has shown us that suicide occurs where it is dark, because people are more depressed there, and Emile Durkheim has written about it, with his book in 1897 concerning the suicide!

When living and working at the earth, we can specialize in climate and weather. A barometer is a device that reads atmospheric pressure. It uses liquid mercury to predict the weather by tracking atmospheric pressure changes resulting from the movement of warm and cold weather systems. Hence, by using the barometer we know which weather conditions that are now, and which will come in the future, and the past was just the weather as it was perceived in earlier times. And all the technologies that the humans are using, are meaning to do experiments with the nature, and often there is a causal analysis by observing the causes and the effects that we are perceiving!

Barometers are often made and used in research. We can make a barometer about how satisfied customers and/or employees was with a product, and what came to the mind before, during and after the buying. And we can make barometers on whether the price is too high, appropriate or too low. And it is just the creativity that determines how any barometer can measure different things for you and me. And we can use these ordinary barometers, and barometers in the social sciences and in the questionnaires in different countries. You can buy a barometer in the trade where it is possible in any shop selling such a product on the globe.

Why did the barometers come? The first altimeters for airplanes were basically barometers. They determined altitude by measuring the change in air pressure with height. Barometric pressure is higher on sunny days, and low on stormy days. Measuring the change in air pressure that comes along with storm systems is a vital part of weather prediction. Therefore, when determining different things with the air pressure and the weather, one had to use a barometer.

A complete theory of how the barometer worked was developed by the French scientist Blaise Pascal. He realized that if air had vertical weight, the pressure would be lower at higher altitudes. In 1646, he asked a relative to carry a barometer up a mountain, and record the mercury height as he went. Sure enough, the mercury level dropped as his relative climbed higher. This proved that air pressure is caused by the vertical weight of air. Accordingly, we can use a barometer in low and high areas, and you can also use it at mountains, for instance at Mount Everest! It is 8 848 meters high, and the highest mountain in the world! It is an experience for your body to climb such high as this!
