Three major social media platforms - WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram were down for about 7 hours yesterday, Monday 4th of October, which happens to be the second time in 2021.

I had to switch to Telegram during these hours to know what is happening around the world and to get in touch with friends and family. Twitter was another alternative for a lot of people to get a feel of raw contents of what's happening around the world. I have stopped using Twitter since the day it was banned in Nigeria, I can't go through the stress of switching to VPN and switching back to normal phone network when I'm done on the bird app.

One of the trending headlines yesterday was:

Mark Zuckerberg loses $ 7 billion after WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram crash

Zuckerberg Loses $5.9 Billion In A Day As Facebook Faces Rare Outage ... - Forbes

Zuckerberg loses $6bn in hours, drops to 5 on Billionaires Index - Vanguard News

Zuckerberg Loses $6 Billion in Hours as Facebook Plunges - Bloomberg.com

What struck me the most is how the media focuses on the loss of the company that was temporarily shutdown and little or no attention was paid to small business owners and companies who have turned these social media platforms to their mini business space.

The social media platforms was down for about 6 hours and that is almost half of the day. Imagine someone who relies on these platforms to market his or her products and also to get in touch with clients. It means yesterday was a big loss even though it may not be compared to that of Mark Zuckerberg. If Mark does not have users, he is better as nothing. It is the interaction that end users have with these platforms that make it so valuable.

My neighbor was lamenting last night about how she might loss a potential job, but thankfully she has regained contact with the person in the early hours of the day. She has been communicating with this client who DMed her on Instagram, they were still talking when the app went down. She didn't collect the client's phone number and that may be the end if the app does not come up in a day or two. The client would have sought for another alternative. I'm pretty sure a lot of people will be in that same situation yesterday across the world.

It is good to have them back anyways.

Thank you for your time lovelies.

Exactly what I was saying.
All the Instagram business owners, I can't imagine how they felt yesterday. Even I was affected because I had classes on WhatsApp I couldn't attend.

Thankfully, they are back. If it had lasted for more than that it will affect everyone that has opened shop/offices on those apps.

I'm sure your class would have been rescheduled...
