Beauty Fliters Built In

Lately I have been making a conscious effort to take more selfies, more pictures, and publish more documentation about our Farm and Garden Activities here in the Colombian Andes. While I was walking down our community 'driveway' yesterday, I noticed something interesting I hadn't put much thought into before - my selfie camera's 'beauty filter'.

The selfie camera seems to adjust automatically to this beauty filter feature. But what parts of me were being filtered out? I wondered this as I trekked the two kilometers down to the main road.

And so I took another selfie, and tried to 'Spot the Differences'.

What I think I see is subtle differences to colorations of my skin. The pose is not quite the same, but we can definitely tell that the filter won't comb my hair!

I wonder about a world in which we mostly engage with each other through 'blemish removing filters'. Some of the marks on my face make me the unique individual I am.

What are your thought about 'show me your scars' in a filtered world?

What is the science behind what this is doing to our minds?

I find all the filters to be pretty weird. Some of them really warp what people look like! I mean, if people want to goof around with cartoons of flower crowns and dog ears ok, but yeah, the "wipe out blemishes" and "make your eyes bigger" type ones just weird me out. It's a little uncanny valley for me!
I watched a video once where this person went through every filter on whatever program she was using and took them all to the extremes and she pretty much looked like an alien, lol.

I agree! I am what I am, take it or leave it. Although I must admit to not posting selfies hardly ever!
