Recording sound on kitchen aluminum foil experiment

avatar

Did You know, that it is possible to store sound on kitchen tinfoil and then play it back ? In fact such device was invented by Edison and it was called phonograph. Imagine how it was for the people few hundreds years ago to hear stored sound - probably it was shocking.

Now, I decided to recreate such device but with my kitchen using some jar, screw, wood, tinfoil and plastic bottle. Surprisingly I managed to record the sound, but not at first time. It turns that it is extremely hard to do that. Foil was tearing apart, the noise from the device was so huge that nothing else was recorded etc etc. Finally, after many tries I found that recording needle has to be sharp, at right angle and that the aluminum foil needs some lubricant to lower tension. Then it happened - I recorded sound on tinfoil. You can hear it on the video.
