Are there natural predators in the area that might do a hostile take over of those homes? As for the birds, I can see the cause for concern but would setting up a cage surrounding the home work? small enough for the bees to pass through I mean.

Yeah there are gnat sized wasps that try to get in. Birds have not been much of a problem yet but they do sometimes eat one or two of the bees.
Ive seen people put up cages around the homes, like chicken wire to keep them from digging too deep. But I have yet to see any animals attack the homes so Ill do that when it happens. For now I just have to worry about insect predators.
