It Has Been A Lovely Weekend So far

avatar

Hello everyone, what do you guys do this weekend, do you have any exciting plans or activities? I've had a pretty exciting one so far.

This weekend, for people who live in Wellington region, we all get an extra day off because it's Wellington's anniversary on Monday. Our office has a tradition of closing early at 3 pm on a Friday before a long weekend so everyone will have more time to enjoy the long weekend. For me, it was awesome because I had a catchup with @forykw. We just happen to know each other through Hive and a friend of mine was thinking about signing up so it would be a great opportunity for both of us to learn more about Hive from him.

Yesterday was a wonderful day so we decided to see each other at a beautiful rooftop bar in the city. As I finished my day a bit early, I decided to go straight to the bar as it is often very crowded later on and we wouldn't be able to get a table.

I was so lucky to arrive in this bar early

Not too long until my partner and my friend arrived

Honestly, I've been on Hive for a while, but I've only focused on Blogging and haven't explored other aspects yet. So it will be difficult to explain everything to my friend in detail and in a way that is easy for her to understand. The conversation with @forykw had helped my friend to understand a bit more about Hive, how it works and what to expect when joining Hive.

I'm grateful that thanks to Hive, we were able to quickly get over our awkward moments as strangers. It is not always that easy for me when I meet a stranger. Very often I felt myself in a position of not knowing what to say.

Love Jose's hat so I asked him to take a photo to share with you guys

Today, I had another catchup with my friend at a library to help her set up the Hive account. I know and understand the difficulties for newbies so we decided to meet in person so I can show her how to use the blogging functionality on Hive.

It was another beautiful day in Wellington so it would be great for a lunch picnic before meeting my friend. Since our destination is in Lower Hutt City, a place that my partner or I had never visited, we wanted to find a park to have our lunch and to be in nature.

Indeed, as I imagined, this place is beautiful with many trees and flowers

I love this small stream running around the park

After that, we met my friend in the library. I was glad that it didn't take long for my friend to learn her way around Hive's system. She is a quick learner so with just a few instructions, she was able to set up her own account, find her favourite communities and prepare for her first post.

I also realized that there are many basic things that I still don't fully understand about Hive e.g. the voting system. So I'll take the time to re-read the beginner guides this weekend too.

As we spent the whole afternoon there, I spent a bit of time to organise my thoughts and arrange what articles to write next. To be honest, I have quite a few posts that are still sitting in the draft mode so this is about the time that I can get it done and schedule to post it later.

My partner and I returned to the city centre at around 5 pm. As the weather was stunning today, I wanted to visit a newly built area that is considered a new icon of Wellington. It caught my attention when I read a post about "There is no I in Wellington without You". I didn't understand at the beginning but when I saw the photo, I told myself "What a clever way to promote Wellington. I must check this out"

Here is the new famous place in Wellington

Without me, indeed there is no I in Wellington

I wanted to make a Y so it becomes Wellyngton - still ok to read, right>

Then I thought how about jumping

What a great weekend I had so far. I met other Hiver in person. I had the chance to listen to his stories and experiences. I introduced my friend to Hive and she is excited about this opportunity. I also had a great lunch out in nature and then had a lot of fun with the new icon of Wellington. I am grateful and appreciate for what I have in this life.

Wow! 😱 The bar was that empty before I came in? !LOL Next time I will go sooner...

It was very nice to meet new faces and hopefully, I was not too "complicated". I often get tagged with being too complex on details. Either way, I think you have a really good understanding of how things are shaping on HIVE and now I can surely say, you are a quick learner!

Your friend's curiosity about HIVE was also very enthusiastic and once she's around with an account, let me know. 😎 As I said... it's free... either use your ecency/peakd referral or anyone else.

I often forget how deep I am on things and to surface a more simplistic view of things in order to explain them, it's harder than I thought. It would be really nice to have simpler questions like the ones asked, in a sort of FAQ so that everyone can check.

Damn... that day was spot on. I didn't even know about that "WELLINGTON" stuff...

Keep exploring and enjoying being !ALIVE.

Some tokens, for when you have time to explore.

Hey guys @forykw @dora381 I'm glad to hear that you guys finally met in person (wish I could join ) and thanks so much for explaining Hive to our friends @forykw. I'm not sure that I can answer all the questions if someone asks me about Hive. 😅 We have a small Vietnamese Hive group in NZ, and I hope that you guys can introduce Hive to more Kiwis 😆

The weather sounds great today ha. I visited Welly a couple of times before and it was so windy :)

Have a great weekend ahead.

Wellington is that basis... when it's good it's perfect. Otherwise... you will notice.

And yeah, I am thinking of exploring more what makes people stay away from crypto and what things would make them try it if it was available. Then it might be actually easier to tackle more people. Because I am suspecting most people will just be the "entry" bit on having someone to onboard, although others might have other reasons as well and I just want to sense which types these usually are.

For me, the main reason I didn't like crypto because the environmental effect that I heard about. When I learned that Hive using different algorithm and commit to use renewable energy, I wanted to try and explore more. But it is just one of the check in my list. Of course, I was curious about Hive blog - a new social media platform and I could tell my dear girlfriend @trangbaby made a lot of positive things in her life.

Exactly and I wonder if more are in the same situation and that might completely change their perspective once knowing that are hundreds of different blockchains out there with all sorts of ways to work.

"...because the environmental effect that I heard about."

You are so right. When I first mentioned HIVE to someone off-chain, their immediate response was to send me this link, which is about an entirely different blockchain altogether, but also named "Hive", which has been buying up green energy production sites in the USA for running their crypto-mining venture. I had to reassure that person that our HIVE blockchain is nothing to do with that.

Thank you my dear. Can't wait for you to be here so we can expand our Hive Viet to New Zealand.

We have quite good weather in Jan/Feb. Thanks to global warming, it is nicer and nicer every year. I get used to with the windy weather so when we have a beautiful day, I thought I was not in Wellington haha it is a fun feeling.

Yeap, my boss kept telling me to go there early if I want to get a nice spot. Still couldn't get a better one LOL

I am actually impressed with how you explain things on Hive. The way you described the voting system on Hive vs the Like on Facebook and other social media platform were so easy to understand. I was able to tell my friend that in Hive you can vote, it's like the Like button on Facebook but you can earn money and that's it I didn't know much about Hive Fund Pool to explain. Thanks to you, I know there is more than that, the meaning behind the voting system, the Hive Fund Pool and fair value for everyone.

When you share with us what you gain from Hive, I can see the true passion that you have for Hive. It becomes a part of your life, your hobby. I also share the same feeling when I start my Hive journey and I am glad we can show my friend that value.

I really appreciate you spending your time with us and I hope we can build a small Hive community right here in Wellington. OMG, I am so excited about it.

I talked about two pools, the rewards pool, which is where the votes on posts comes from, and there is another one called the "Decentralized Hive Fund" (check here) where there is money to distribute among proposals that anyone submits, and if people vote on them and go above a certain threshold, they will receive the requested money.

Eager for you to drive a Hive Community here in Wellington. I will help where I can for sure.

Oh yes, I actually voted for two projects before, I think it's Hivefest and Hivebuzz.

I will get in touch if I need help to make it happen. Enjoy your long weekend

I am so glad that Anis is right here in Wellington so I can spend time with her to guide her through the first step. I know it is not easy and just like my first time, you jumped on the phone to help me set up.

The weather has been stunning! Thanks for inviting me to join your conversation with @forykw and for sitting down with me to get me started 😀 I don't think I have explored the park you went to - looks like it must have been a good spot for lunch. I should check out the new Wellington sign too. So many places to go, and things to see!!!

Even I never explored that sign... so, already on my checklist.

I am so grateful for good weather recently. Yes that park is small but quite good for lunch. We sat next to the small stream and enjoying our meal with some ducks around.

Gus and I had a lot of fun taking photos there haha it is quite new so many people waiting for pictures.

Hey, glad I stumbled on your blog post here, @dora381. It is always nice to meet other Kiwis on the blockchain. I live in West Auckland. I remember @forykw from when I was on the legacy blockchain, some three years ago. I recall hearing about that new art installation to promote Wellington, I think it got a mention on "NewShub", and some of the locals were not best pleased with the mis-spelling of their city's name. I think it is pretty cool, as a promotion of the town though. Beats the driftwood sign of Hokitika, I reckon. The main other thing that Wellington is known for is that "slide projector on top of a wedding cake, on top of a water wheel" that we call the Beehive, and a copycat Hollywood sign. 😜

Hehehe, time fly. Cool projects you are starting. I am also growing some stuff here in New Zealand...

Running a HIVE node ( @atexoras.witness) in Wellington that is currently still private (in terms of RPC/seed node) but once I move things to an isolated machine (for better performance and because I want to spin up another node later in the year) the intent will be to open up the node publicly so that, at least NZ, around islands and AUS have a very quick RPC node to talk to. It's a huge challenge to talk with most of the nodes in the northern hemisphere, so starting a HIVE node was the best thing I could do.

Wow, that is such a cool thing to do! I look forward to the day when I can switch to your node. I was actually pondering on whether I could start my own HIVE node in the future, maybe running on a Raspberry Pi? I have my projects planned out for the next two years, but maybe in 2024 I could start looking at something like that. Would be an interesting thing to try, actually producing blocks on the blockchain.

(Edited)

I am re-loving the experience. From what I remembered a few years ago, things got so much better. And they keep improving at code level. The main reason for me to go for it was because running a Hive-Engine witness node that needs to gather blocks from HIVE nodes was taking too long against nodes that are physically far away from NZ. Having a local node is blazing faster! The second idea was because having a full history (I am not there yet) node in NZ would allow me to do everything on HIVE via that local node. Instead of broadcasting things across the planet. And if I could support local communities by join effort, then even better (which is the intent).

my own HIVE node in the future, maybe running on a Raspberry Pi?

At the moment it will be tricky... should not be impossible but you need quite a lot of IO (if not using memory to run the memory file that is around 20/21GB ish) and to be honest I never tried a Raspberry Pi for IO intensive things... so I have not experience on recommending it.

You would need to compile the source code because I don't think anyone did it yet... for ARM... mostly is C++ code.

But if you give it a go, let me know and I can help with the experience. You will need at least 500GB disk... and NVMe or very fast SSD, otherwise it will take a couple of weeks to replay the blockchain, depending on the IO performance of the disk.

Sounds interesting, indeed. At present my homelab raspi uses USB3.0 HDD's (spinning rust) and not SSD's as yet, but in the future I plan to migrate my raspi home server to SSD drives, and in a RAID5 enclosure. I'm retired and a sickness beneficiary, so I can't afford to do this all at once, but it is my intention to have a few raspi's running here at home eventually.

You can order a https://platinum.crypto.com/r/hz3dzstewl card (will run on SGD currency) and then use it in NZ. Then you can send from Hive-Engine directly to Crypto.com (DOGE for example) and charge the card, and order more raspis =)

Hi @frittro, so nice to meet you here ☺️

It's interesting to know some locals were not happy with the sign. For me, I was impressed with the idea of making an unique experience for people when they visit Wellington. "There is no I in Wellington without you" is a brilliant way to promote the city and people can have fun too.

slide projector on top of a wedding cake, on top of a water wheel" that we call the Beehive

Hahaha it's so cool to know that. I just visited the Beehive recently and will write a post to share with our Hivers about the building - I might add your info if you don't mind?

A copycat Hollywood sign - I haven't heard about it, will check it out

"... write a post to share with our Hivers about the building - I might add your info if you don't mind?"

Sure, go ahead. I didn't come up with that phrase though, it has been around for a long time as a description of the Beehive. In fact, in this article from 2009 it was used to describe the Beehive as the world's third ugliest building, haha!
