iPhone 14 is Here: What happens to your savings?

In a typical economy, we always expect advances, as most companies just advance in order to stay relevant. One evidence of advancements is upgrades in technological tools, usually presented in a yearly fashion just as we saw at Apple's "Far Out" event yesterday (September 6th). Now we have the latest iPhones, Apple watches, AirPods, and more, should you upgrade, or at least retro-upgrade (that's move at a step higher)?

The Wow Factors

Apple events are no kids show. There production value are among the most excellent in the industry. After following through in the 2 hours long event, here are some key highlights:

1. New iPhones

There are four new iPhones, the 14 (normal 14 with a plus version), and the iPhone 14 Pros of the world (the normal 14 Pro and the 14 Pro Max).

2. Dynamic Island

The iPhone 14 Pros came with a new visual look in the screen that instead of the usual notch, it now has a pill shaped cutout that houses the front camera and face ID censors. But what's more interesting is how they blended this with the software through the Dynamic Island implementation that allows the pill to resize and accommodate some UI elements. Trust me, it looks very cool, I must confess.

3. New Cameras

Across the board, all new iPhones come with a new front camera with auto-focus, which is a scarcity in mobile phone's front cameras today. For the 14 Pros, you get a new 48mp censor for it's main censor. There are just some general level hardware and software improvements here and there.

4. Life and Safety

All new Apple watches and iPhones come with a crash detection hardware and software feature that can alert emergency services in case of a road traffic accident. There's also this feature they hope you never get to use on the new iPhones, that's the ability to communicate through satellite, maybe, in a situation in which for some reasons you're unable to access mobile connectivity or WiFi. As they show, maybe you're stuck in a desert (I don't know why you should, but things happen).

There are a lot more features such as the removal of the SIM card tray to go fully e-SIM and few other products. But these were the most significant to me.

Buy or Hold on?

If you're reading this, there are good chances that you already own a functional smartphone that getting a new and the just recent iPhone may involve a lot of mental justifications. Trust me, the iPhone upgrade doesn't seem too much of an incremental update nor does it feel so much like a significant update. It just feels in between, but the implication of this is that, just of the features introduced won't bring in so much quality of life improvements if your current device is already okay.

Apple makes so good phones that if you even have one from 3-5 years ago, it's enough to handle the tasks of today (though, battery life could be a concern).

But what if you're in the android camp? To me, the new iPhones are not compelling enough for anyone using an Android flagship or mid-range device from 2 years ago.

But another possibility is a retro-upgrade. As new iPhones are launched, old ones get cheaper, and you may be tempted to go for previous models. The simple question remains, "do you really need an iPhone or a new device?".

Tech companies will always want you to get the latest and greatest because that's how they make more money. They spend money in clever advertising and high quality launch events, along with influencer marketing to lure you into getting the latest and greatest, but trust me, you don't need the latest and greatest!

Making the best financial decisions involves more efforts on emotional control, developing resistance to marketing gimmicks and careful planning on how best to channel your financial resources.

Don't let your brain fool you into the justification game, but be in control.

Well, I partially agree with you! I have other priorities to spend money, maybe if I was richer I wouldn't care about buying the new Iphone every year! The problem is that apple's phone start to get slower and battery consuming with the time passing. I am always behind, I never buy the top mobile recently release, I don't care buying the mobile phone from 1 or 2 years ago, I just need something that doesn't let me down , dying to quick and slow!

You've made a point. With the way we rely on our devices, it makes a lot of sense to ensure that they are always reliable.
