Black Semiconductor raises $273 Million to advance its Graphene-Based Chip Connectivity Technology

With the exponential growth of artificial intelligence, it is clear that increasingly more computing power is required than initially. In fact, we could even think that this does not necessarily have to be the case, as models evolve, it could end up needing less power because they have become more efficient.
Even in the future, it is expected that home computers will include AI in their systems natively, albeit locally without needing to rely on the cloud. This could be a positive point, although there are people concerned about their privacy.
There are no doubts that technology is shaping a technological era much more focused on artificial intelligence. For this reason, different companies are trying to be part of this evolution by offering their products to increase that growth and achieve economic benefit in a market with great potential for the future.
A startup called Black Semiconductor is driving a graphene-based chip development technology. This German company has managed to raise the impressive sum of around $273 million in funding from both public and private sources.
Daniel and Sebastian Schall are the co-founders of Black Semiconductor, although all this started at the University of Aachen.
Daniel Schall ensures that the R&D sector will receive the necessary funding to build a production plant in Aachen, but there are also plans to hire engineers and achieve business development improvement. Furthermore, the goal is to build trust relationships with other pioneering companies in Europe such as ASML located in the Netherlands, dedicated to chip manufacturing. The idea is clear; increase mass production and benefit cloud computing, which is widely used today.
Schall also mentions that the production of commercial products could be available by 2031, although it's an estimate if everything goes as planned. It doesn't seem to be an easy task because by then, technology will have evolved even further, so they cannot fall behind and must be consistent in every aspect. In other words, by those dates, they must have a cutting-edge product with the latest available technology, which is a process of high pressure where time is precious.
What I find surprising is the support that Black Semiconductor is receiving at the country level. The Federal Government of Germany along with North-Rhine-Westphalia decided to finance the project with a sum of 228.7 million euros, considering that this investment is somehow focused on an "important European common interest project." This state aid consists of 8.1 million euros, marked by the European Commission with an interest in technologically significant changes.
Robert Habeck, who is the Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany, believes that the idea behind the project is very promising, focusing on the development of fast chips specific for AI applications. Additionally, it is noteworthy that the company stands out as a leader among 31 other projects within the IPCEI Microelectronics initiative.
It is worth mentioning another round of funding consisting of the remaining 25.7 million euros, led by Porsche Ventures and Project A Ventures. It must also be highlighted that other participants include: Scania Growth, Capnamic, Tech Vision Fonds, and NRW BANK, Vsquared Ventures, Cambium Capital, and Onsight Ventures. These important firms have participated in other instances, with investments of up to $6.6 million in 2020, and were present in the Series A funding.
Something important to highlight is that the chips could be useful not only in providing raw power for artificial intelligence as we know it but also in vehicles, which will excite automotive companies about this revolution, with Porsche being one of them. It is clear that as technology advances, it can be included in new settings, hence the interest in the final product that could be a significant era change for the brand.
Considering that the chip market is dominated by NVIDIA and its GPUs, Schall believes that the issue of connectivity between hundreds of chips that could work together still needs to be addressed. He considers graphene to be an optimal element for photonics, benefiting the power complementation between chips. Currently, photonics is based on Silicon, and this semiconductor ecosystem reaches over 100 providers, so Schall feels that there is a path to be paved with his novel graphene-based implementation.
If this idea is adopted, it could not only displace the previous one but also start a commercialization process or at least a series of businesses, reinforcing the knowledge about it and its ongoing research. Stefan Hoechbauer, who is the General Manager of AWS Germany and Central Europe, expressed his admiration for the Schall brothers for wanting to go beyond what is possible today, stating that this is definitely the mindset of those leading AWS forward.

Undoubtedly it has a long way to go, but as far as I see it has a great funding which will be very helpful to continue climbing progress, may in the future and not too distant this will be the direct competitor of NVIDIA, as it has long been in place and no other has dethroned him, because it has no worthy competitor, but if this implementation in the Chips is given as is being indicated, it will surely be a novel project for all.
This could definitely be the case, although I would like to think that they will adopt this technology and look to partner with NVIDIA.
