Starlink About To Enter Testing

Yesterday I wrote an article that discussed how Samsung is already looking towards the emergence of 6G. The company believe the next generation communication protocol will be available in 2028.

While the wireless communication system is receiving an upgrading, Elon Musk and SpaceX are looking to change things on the Internet front.

SpaceX is in the process of launching thousands of satellites that will make up its Starlink program. This is going to provide satellite internet coverage to the entire planet.

This project has long been talked about. A couple years ago, it seemed like a pipedream. Now, however, it is getting close. With a few hundred satellites already in orbit, it is forecast that testing in North America will begin this Summer.

We presently have roughly 60% of the global population online. The other 40% are still not connected. This will change over the next 4-5 years as projects such as Starlink roll out.

It is anticipated that a couple trillion dollars a year will be added to the global economy as the rest of the world comes online. Having 8 billion minds applying their creativity is going to have an amazing impact.

There is also a good chance many of the problems being confronted in different areas of the world. Without access to the world's knowledge base, many suffer from having the basic information needed to solve basic problems. This will not be the case in the next few years.

With the Internet-of-Things on the horizon, advancements in communication systems are going to be required. We are going to see hundreds of billion of devices connected, all sending data all over the world. Autonomous vehicles and smart factories are going to require systems with almost no latency, something that does not exist today.

As for SpaceX, Starlink is just one phase in a much larger process. The money generated from the Internet service is going to be used to fund further space exploration and, possible, colonization. Musk has SpaceX focused upon eventually getting to Mars and settling there. Over the next 3 decades, the goal is to get 1 million people living on the Red Planet.

The beta testing is the first step forward. If successful, the belief is the commercial service will be available in some locations by the end of 2020. This would be aggressive progress.

A great deal of the growth we saw over the last few decades is due to the advancement in communication systems. Being able to send data around the planet much quicker is only bringing about new opportunities. As mentioned yesterday, the idea of holograms and digital clones could really change the way people interact with others and the world around them.

Starlink is looking to be a part of the movement forward. Having global internet will help to bring everyone online which will radically affect the prospects for countries where there is very little coverage presently.

I am excited about the upcoming advancements and the potential economic growth they would generate.

I am particularly excited about Starlink because it is the dream for me to be able to live out my retirement in the wilderness and make once a month supply runs. However, the Mrs. and I would require Internet for the occasional movie, to download our Kindle books, and to be able to post on Hive.

I do worry that current economic conditions are setting the stage for policies that would act like an anchor on innovation. After all the present money printing, it's a matter of time before taxes are raised or we get hit with rampant inflation. In other words, I worry we may stifle advancements.

Money was printed to the tune of $23 trillion in the 2010s yet we didnt have inflation running so I think those beating that drum are barking up the wrong tree.

Deflation is a greater likelihood. When more so much of the global economy falls under the laws of IT, the central banks cannot print enough money to keep pace. The deflationary rates are just overwhelming.

In the middle of the next decade, the cost of living will be far below what it is today.

I hope you're right. It would be amazing to have both colonies on Mars and a lower cost of living.

The technology push that caused consumer electronics to collapse in price is also going to penetrate food, energy, materials (construction), and transportation.

Couple that with the shift in upper level education to online that is likely going to take place over the next decade and it is easy to see how things will drop in price.

As for Mars colonization, that might not start until 2040 but we shall see.
