Diamonds Out Of Thin Air

Technology is changing many aspects of life. Over the last year, I wrote a number of articles detailing how many "wealth" items could end up becoming demonetized by technology.

The most cited example is the idea that asteroid mining could somehow affect the prices of commodities/minerals on Earth. While asteroid mining could be a part of our future, it is not a threat to the prices of commodities, especially gold, here on this planet.

If it does become a reality, those minerals will be used for development in space.

Where technology could alter the global gold market is underneath the oceans. There is an estimated $500 trillion worth of gold under the sea, something that we cannot access. This will not be the case forever. With advancements in robotics and drones, we could see automated underwater mining systems in the future that are able to extract trillions worth of gold. The supply/demand balance could be forever changed.

Diamonds are a different story.

It appears that we are not dealing with some futuristic technology idea that could affect the global market. Instead, we are seeing advancements made now that could cause the diamond market to crash.

One thing we must state is that diamonds are more than just a symbol of wealth. For example, diamonds are likely to operate as memory in future quantum computers. Therefore, we will see an increase in demand going forward.

We also know that diamonds is a heavy controlled market. Many believe it is manipulated by a couple major players. They control the supply to keep the prices elevated. This does not bode well for businesses that require access to these gems.

For this reason, some of the technology breakthroughs could be the answer.

Dale Vince, the founder of green energy supplier Ecotricity, claims to have developed the world’s only diamonds to be made from carbon, water and energy sourced directly from the elements at a “sky mining facility” in Stroud in the UK.

The “green technology first” uses carbon dioxide captured directly from the atmosphere to form the diamonds – which are chemically identical to diamonds mined from the earth – using nothing more than wind and solar electricity, with water collected from rainfall.

Vincent went on to say:

“Making diamonds from nothing more than the sky, from the air we breathe – is a magical, evocative idea – it’s modern alchemy,” said Vince. “We don’t need to mine the earth to have diamonds, we can mine the sky.”

Source

Vince says his company can produce 200 carats a month but expects it to scale to 1,000 a month within a year.

The materials sciences is making huge advancements. We are seeing a trend to "lab grown" in many areas. Why should diamonds be any different.

Essentially, we are moving towards a future where items are build atom by atom. The basic building blocks of life are within our control. By manipulating them in different ways, we can end up developing minerals that only nature previously could make.

In this instance, we are discussing making diamonds literally out of thin air.

The diamond business is a dirty one. With the toll of human slavery along with the impact on the environment, creating these items in a lab could offer extreme benefit. It would flood the market with supply, thus bringing down the price for companies that need it.

Of course, that rock you bought for your wife will not likely hold its value. But, then, it never did.

Here we see how technological advancements can alter major markets and their pricing.

It is best not to believe that things will hold their value forever.

I heard before that the supply of diamonds is manipulated and it is much higher. It's interesting how diamonds could power quantum computers, I personally think that jewelry is something banal unless there is a special meaning behind it. I have a golden ring that was given by me by my grandmother at my wedding and I use it with love.

“Making diamonds from nothing more than the sky, from the air we breathe – is a magical, evocative idea – it’s modern alchemy,” said Vince. “We don’t need to mine the earth to have diamonds, we can mine the sky.”

This is very interesting, makes me think of the Beatles song, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds hehe.

Technology is changing many things yes, almost

In fact now I don’t want diamonds than crypto 🤣 Gold is enough or even silver.

Everyone give value in their way but often believe in majority :)

Interesting take on the Asteroid mining will never make it back to the planet.

Very mind opening post. One of your best. Thank you.

Interesting take on the Asteroid mining will never make it back to the planet.

Think about the expense required just from the distance traveled. Plus, with the materials sciences advancing, we will be able to manufacture much of what we need on Earth.

However, in space, the options, at least initially will be limited. After all, if you are building a colony on Moon, Mars, or even in space itself, what materials are going to be used. No trees on those planets to cut down.

Yes. That might happen. But, there will be a massive push and pull effect until we have a clear winner. You are right in saying that we do not know how and when things will shape up differently to change the global economic and supply-chain order. I do believe that all these fancy stones will be be made in labs going forward. Either the value will go down or the couple of players in diamond industry will start to buy diamond from these labs and make sure the market is not open.🙂

The problem is that the technology, once out there, can be duplicated. Even with patenting, companies (or other countries) steal it, willing to fight it all out in court.

Do not forget, at one time, aluminum was one of the most valuable minerals on the planet. Centuries ago, royalty did not eat off and drink from gold but, rather, aluminum.

That's true. Speculating and predicting future is always a tough ask. I really love to speculate how things could play out in the future.

What a fascinating article! I had not heard of "sky mining" before, but the thoughts of diamonds being made from "...carbon dioxide captured directly from the atmosphere" is amazing! 😮

Yeah absolutely mind blowing when you think about it.

The possibilities of what is taking place with technology is really amazing. Entire industries are changing right before our eyes.

Out with the old is becoming very commonplace these days.

Interesting, but what keeps the ones that are already regulating the diamond market from just buying up all patents that enable someone to make diamonds instead of traditionally mining them. They might want to control the market prices even more that way in anticipation of the rise in value when computing will require diamonds.

Big companies will always find a way to do so in a capitalist system.
Unless we find a clever way or loophole to combat this, like blockchain vs centralized financial systems.

Patents are often ignored. Look at all the companies that steal other companies secrets and produce it themselves. We also see this among countries.

China has been stealing stuff from the west for the last few decades without concern.

When this happens, long court battles take place usually resulting in the one who took the technology paying a fee as penalty.

You make a good point. And if the profit and overall benefits for society far outweigh the hassle of court cases and penalty fees, people would certainly take that risk.

500 trillion worth of gold but only 21 million BTC with a few millions lost forever.

What would hold gold's value in the next two decades if BTC will become the new gold, the digital one?

What would hold gold's value in the next two decades if BTC will become the new gold, the digital one?

Many are asking that same question.

While gold still has the scarcity aspect to it, it will do fine. However, I am not sure we see the $5,000 gold many predict but who knows, markets do their own thing.

Over the next couple decades, we might find new ways to mine gold easier and autonomously. If that happens, just like Aluminum centuries ago, it will start to lose its "shine".

This is what happens when things get demonetized through technology.

Exactly. Besides the aspect of store of value, the next question that popps my mind is what is its intrinsic value?

Thanks for this excellent piece, it's been a pleasure to read it.

We are seeing a trend to "lab grown" in many areas.

I don't mind if the benefits are higher than the damage. In this case it's a good thing, let's hope.

I remember when I was a kid, I never believe that diamond exist. Most time I tend to get confused which one has more value between diamond and gold. Hard to pick one out

Whether or not asteroid mining can disrupt prices on Earth may not be so clear cut. Suppose building space colonies becomes a large industry. Surely, side streams of minerals dropped to the Earth can be made out of those mined in space. The gravity fields of the planets or the Sun can be used to decelerate the shipments to match the orbital velocities of the inner planets.

Off topic, I think the song you linked below refers to LSD. Back the in the day, musicians and artists couldn't get enough of that stuff. :)

That is true although there might be little point.

We are seeing technology advancing here on Earth to the point where many minerals can either be mined differently or can be created in a lab.

Asteroid mining is still decades away. By that time, we will probably be accessing more gold, as an example, than we know what to do with.

As for LSD, it was very popular in that era, without a doubt.

Anyway, regardless of whether gold will become abundant through mining or other methods on Earth or in space, it will be done as a store of value within the next 100 years.

That is pretty awesome. It is crazy to think that something which is so rare today could become quite commonplace in the future. I agree with you, the logistics of mining and returning the elements to the Earth from asteroids would probably be quite cost prohibitive. At least until more advancements are made in space technology.

Solid read. Tech disruptions everywhere.

how many "wealth" items could end up becoming demonetized by technology.

This line was a bit scary about the post. Now, for those who have custody of say Gold, Silver and other valuables that many not find relevance in the tech era, what could be done?
