6G Chips Starting To Take Shape

It is truly amazing how quickly things move.

We are now starting to see 5G networks being rolled out across the United States, Western Europe, and China. While the coverage is almost non-existent, it will look remarkably different in a year or two.

That said, the next generation is already being worked upon. Many expect 6G to see the light of day come 2030.

A team of researchers in Singapore had a breakthrough in chip design that could see speed 100 times that of 5G.

Singapore researchers have a terahertz (THz) wave chip that can transmit at a data rate of 11 Gigabits per second (Gbit/s). It is capable of supporting real-time streaming of 4K high-definition video and passes the theoretical limit of 10 Gbit/s for 5G wireless communications.

6G is mostly theoretical at this point. While there are some projects that had "real" results, there is little concrete done so far. Of course, with 5G going to occupy most of this decade, there is still time.

If 6G does roll out as many expect it, it will make 5G look like 2G. The former base stations will be able to handle millions of units, as compared to 4,000 per 4G station. We will also see much lower latency which will allow for a network to handle millions of autonomous vehicles.

Probably the biggest potential use is with artificial intelligence. You will likely see collaborative AI agents which can only be achieved by wireless communications.

Essentially, human intelligence will be sent through the airwaves instantly. We will also see most robots connected to these networks, ensuring on time capabilities.

The new frequencies in the sub-Terahertz bands will transmit super-fast computations over a wide range of frequencies, allowing future cellphones to have vastly greater capabilities.

For example, the 6G phone of the future will be able to test the air around you for allergens, explosives or toxic chemicals and determine if your food is safe to eat. It will help you see in the dark using night vision and render far better images than the human eye can see. Just as the cellphone has replaced the standalone camera and the wristwatch for many, and is beginning to replace the wallet, 6G phones may someday replace eyeglasses through the use of goggles, which can double as headphones, that have incredible imaging capability and stereophonic sound.

This communication system will be able to handle hundreds of billions of devices and make communication near instantaneous. Much of what is projected is Sci-Fi at this point but will be the basis for the next generation technological advancement.

In a world of increasing automation, having the communication system is vital. We are now seeing the 5th generation being deployed but the 6th is being worked upon by many researchers. There is already billions of dollars on the line to achieve a standing in this industry.

It all starts with the chips and we are watching some progress being made.

Well I've never even envisaged the possibilities of 5G now 6G will be next to perfection because it'll be the game changer. I feel it might be a huge awakening not possibilities in science and technology. Definitely. Thanks for writing. Cheers.

This is great and from financial point of view surely it creates an opportunity. Investing in 5G and 6G companies might be a good move at this point with short to medium term for 5G and long term for 6G. Also same companies might be involved in both and that could be just better.

That is true although 6G research is at the university level now. It is still trying to get the foundation in place in terms of the technology.

But you are right, there are opportunities.
