Will You Be Alive In 2100?

avatar

This was a questioned I asked in a discord room and got some interesting responses.

However, it is a valid one? Do you believe that you will be alive in the year 2100? For the youngest among us, this is a possibility since one will be about 100 years old. For the rest of us, it would put us at ages that are presently unrealistic.

Thus, logic says that there is no way most of us will be alive in 80 years. After all, people do not live to 120, 130 or 140 years old.

At least that is our present condition. A few super-centurians are making it to 115 or so but that is far from the norm. We also are in a place where most experts believe that 120 is the biological limit for the human body.

Nevertheless, things are changing quickly. Could this have an impact not only on how long we live but also the quality of life we lead as we age?

Source

Many feel that technology is about to embark upon a radical acceleration of breakthroughs which will radically alter the human condition going forward. Whether one believes in transhumanism or not, it is hard to argue with technological progress.

The longevity movement has received an enormous boost. Many of the tech billionaires who are sub 40 realize they want to live forever. For this reason many of them, such as the Google boys, have set aside billions to fund research into these areas.

While much of that could be a bit far-fetched, there is no doubt that progress is being made. Research such as the mapping out of the genome as well as DNA editing could help to alleviate many diseases such as cancer, dementia, and strokes. What would this do for the life expectancy of people?

Of course, that does not add to overall life expectancy of humanity. While we could see the average increase, the top end limit is still in place.

That is unless we can figure out a way to push beyond it.

Here is where things are getting interesting. Many projects are underway in an effort to bring out "therapies" that will help to solve some of the problems with aging. Some might have heard the goal is to make 100 the new 60. This is how the thought process is unfolding.

Ultimately, a great deal of this comes down to what is made via technology in general. The last 30 years saw incredible progress with digitization and the expansion of information. This spread out to video, audio, and communications.

Could this move into the realm of medicine, nutrition, food production, and other areas of life that will enhance our well-being?

Researchers are confident that advancements will be made over the next couple decades. Will that translate into decades being added to the average person's life is anyone's guess. Nevertheless, by focusing upon dying as a disease, many are looking to eradicate it.

Even if this is out of the reach, the progress made could have benefits aside from immortality.

Getting back to the original question, 2100 is a long way away. To try and put it in perspective, think about the fact that 80 years ago puts us in 1940, or World War 2. How much has changed in the world since that time?

Source

With many claiming that biology is similar to computer coding, we might be moving into an age when biological breakthroughs are as simple as some reprogramming. We are in the very early stages of this field and it will be quite a while before we see anything substantial from it.

One thing we need to caution against is trying to imagine the next 80 years by looking back at the last 80. In terms of progress, we could see a similar move from 1940 to today occur over the next 15-20 years. Thus, the impact of technology over the next 80 will border on something we can barely comprehend.

Personally, I feel that many who are below 40 right now stand a good chance of being alive in 2100. The next 10 years could be a turning point. Some have mentioned that 2030 is when we arrive at Longevity Escape Velocity, a time when the average life expectancy increases by more than a year for each one passing. The most recent forecast I read is that by that time, the average life expectancy will grow by 1.3 years.

Thus, we could see time passing at a rate faster than biological degradation.

As we sit here in 2020, some of this might see a bit out there. However, when we look back at what was around in 1990, we realize that the idea that people would be using a "smartphone" was an outrageous idea too. Today, billions around the world are daily users of that technology.

So what are your thoughts? Do you think you will be around come the turn of this century?

I won't say I will be since I like to do stupid things that increase my risks of passing earlier. With that said I'm fairly confident that the potential is certainly there for people to make that time.

This debate is also kind of going on CT where @danheld posted a chart that makes it seem very likely to be a potential based off past success let alone the advances you were speaking to.

This is a difficult question to answer.

Mostly because everything you wrote as reasons, i would throw out as beyond shtupid, but there are a lot of things you aren't seeing that will make 100 years old seem like nothing.

While much of that could be a bit far-fetched, there is no doubt that progress is being made. Research such as the mapping out of the genome as well as DNA editing could help to alleviate many diseases such as cancer, dementia, and strokes.

This as an example.

DNA has nothing to do with these things.
Editing DNA will not fix any of these things.

But the really hard part is that, fixing these things will change your DNA. (if we were able to read DNA that accurately)

Currently we are treating cancer with radiation.
Really! Does a body develop cancer because of a lack of radiation? A radiation deficiency?
No.

Cancer is actually better cured through diet.
But we are sooo shtupid about diet, that we still measure food in calories.
We haven't even begun to look into what is nutritious in food.
There are a few people working on calibrating nutrition numbers.

As an example, would you eat at McDs if you knew it has 0 nutrition?
It would make it so much easier.
McDs -- 0
Tomato, green ripened with kerosene -- 100
Oraganic, vine ripened tomato -- 500

We currently work with 1/7th of the body.
Allopathic medicine (rots-child medicine) will be seen as being more idiotic than using leaches appears to us.

We will see all kinds of advancements that seem insane.
Like tinctures (chemical amounts so small that they can't be measured but have an effect on the body)

So, the future is bright for living a lot longer.
700 is closer to the actual normal age a body is designed to work before it breaks down.

However, the coming ice age, economic collapse, floods, freezing and fires will be difficult on lots of people.
Those that survive will probably see 2100.

Yeah the nutrition information that exists in most things is absolutely trash. It’s crazy how people are so focused on calories, fat and carbs. In the proper balance, you can maximize fats, carbs and calories and still be quite healthy.

It is interesting that you’re assuming the body can live to hundreds of years. Are you referring to monks that seem to be more in tune with their body and able to achieve higher lifespans? I don’t know the expected life span of someone who eats properly, manages the stresses and does things like meditate daily. I’m thinking 200 is probably achievable in the right circumstances.

You can check the bible for some stats on people living a long time.

The biggest thing that has shifted since 2012 is that we can rewrite our energy templates without dying and being reborn.

In the old energy, you would incarnate, learn your lesson, then die. So that you could be reincarnated with that new energy working in your body. Thus we had a lot of time of short lives.

Now, we can shift that pattern and apply it without dying.
This will lead to a lot of people starting to live towards the 200s.

But this is really woo-woo shit, and not at all apparent.

The way things are going, I’m hoping to make it through 2020. 😅

Physically, I don’t know how much of a quality state I would be in if I live past 100 to make it to 2100 lol but I may still have my wits about me.

The way that they’re trying to use technology to force things through gene editing is still a long way off from becoming truly acceptable with minimal side effects. The people who have been billionaires for a long time such as the Rothschild’s of the world have a better leg up than the new tech ones. I think they are further along in the research than most and won’t be sharing their findings. Anything in the public sphere has, in my opinion, been allowed to be there. Most of what we get is what is allowed for us to have.

In Castles response, I think through superior combinations of fasting, eating right and doing things that are good for our body will make it optimal conditions for us to live a lot longer than we could with the contemporary medical systems current methodologies. There’s too much poison, focus on a pill but ignoring the side effects type of mentality to think that we would be able to live successfully past 100. The oldest people most often have the simplest lifestyles and eat well. It could be that easy.

I'm going to have to start seeing action now. I'm planning on retirement in 15 years. If they add on another 50 years, my planning is in trouble.

That is one major issue that is already being seen. Funding of retirement if woefully inadequate, for many reasons.

But one of the issues is people are living longer which means they outlive their money.

It is something to consider when retirement planning.

2100 unfortunately I won't be here to see it, but the desire to be able to "snoop" about what that future will be like made me reflect on this idea for a few minutes.

It is clear that with the advances in science, logically, we should have some progress with regard to an extra time. Interestingly, this questioning and pity that we probably won't be here to know.

Well in Black Mirror there is a chapter where people that is dying is connected to a kind of neural network that simulates the real life (much like a matrix for dying people) and its a technology that in lets say 20 years doesn't seem so crazy, so depending what is your concept of being alive we could even live more. In that context who knows maybe 300 years isn't so much time.

There is a segment of those out there who believe "immortality" will come through some form of brain uploading or our "conscious" ending up on some neural network.

Thus far, we know so little about the brain that I am not sure how anyone can venture a guess at that becoming a reality but maybe there is something to it.

I don't think that I'll be alive in 2100. I don't think that I will get older than 85. Maybe less, because my nutrition is bad.

(Edited)

This blockchain of a thing is going to become an household name like wordpress maybe by 2021, I'm 28 now, hopefully I live long enough to experience 2021 then I will remember this post. 3D printing, Automation(AI), blockchain are going to play a very huge role in the shaping of our future. Funny enough we are the ones shaping the future and providing those tools....block by block.

Concerning death, i feel the time will come when digital footprints will be valueable enough that it will be implemented in life after death. Imagine a real life person dying but living on through technology! Bam
