There is no Table
After day two of training, I am pretty worn out. It is not that it was difficult, but it was just long and being around colleagues throughout the day with zero personal space, there was no chance to recharge. And tomorrow, I will be delivering my own session to a team that I haven't delivered to earlier, from a department I don't know very well. Thankfully, I don't need to understand too much of what they do to deliver and facilitate my part of their workshop.
In today's training however, we were talking a little bit about the impact of automation on business in general, and how people underestimate how much it is going to affect them. We have dealt with business automation for a few decades already, and with artificial intelligence for about the last ten years. I am not a coder, but I know a thing or two about the affects automation can have, because I have seen it first-hand in the companies I have consulted for. There has not only been reductions in headcount, it has also affected future headcount, because efficiencies have meant that growth can happen without more people.
For a look into the future for many companies, the Swedish BNPL Klarna, gives some insight. They have gone from 5000 employees down to 3800, and are looking to settle at around 2000. This has been made possible by investment into AI tools that replace the majority of their customer service and marketing positions.

It is "too simplistic" to simply say new jobs would be created in the future. I mean, maybe you can become an influencer, but it's hard to do so if you are 55-years-old,"

And he is right, because while they will likely pay the remaining staff more, the leavers will have very few options available for them, if any, and the competition is going to be fierce. It won't just be the older amongst us out of a job, it will be the majority of us in any jobs that can be codified and automated in some way, whether through mechanical automation, or artificial intelligence - often with the two working together.
But, the average person reading the news seems to be blinded by the media representation of AI, or what the corporations are pushing publicly. They care about being able to make AI-generated emojis on the new iPhone, not the loss of design jobs now and in the future for those who were previously creating these assets. While there will be some specialized jobs created through to the midterm, the better the technology gets, the less people will be required to provide their skills.
Some people think that once we have robots doing all the menial tasks that we don't want to do, then we will all be able to live in abundance. I believe that they are mistaken, because that is not how humans treat each other. A small percentage will have near unlimited possibility, but the rest will just wither away, or descend into the neo-dark ages. Unless there is extreme fundamental change in the way we organize, govern, and value humans in society.
Do leopards change their spots?
I am worried for my employable future, and I think anyone who needs more than ten years of work in order to retire debt free, is going to be in trouble also. But even then, there are other factors to consider, because while an individual or even a family might be able to look after themselves, they will also be living in communities where the majority are unable, and this is going to cause other problems. Those who can't move to a fully serviced island, are going to have a pretty difficult life, regardless of how much money they have.
Who knows, perhaps humanity will reach some singularity where our intelligence is enough that we are able to govern ourselves effectively. However, it is more likely that the technological singularity will happen before that anyway, and then we would have close to zero chance of affecting our future, because the technology will be driving us, not us driving it. Perhaps that is the point where humanity will be able to find peace and harmony, because our fate will be out of our hands and the artificial intelligence will guide our every action.
Like pets.
I sat in a few days of training, with people's whose jobs are heavily affected by whether they can effectively apply what they learned to their every day behaviors. However, it will take time to make it habit, they will apply it imperfectly, and forget the majority of what they learned. But it won't be long until an AI will do the majority of their work, and it will free up their time to do more value-adding activities. There is a problem with that though, because there won't be a large enough market to warrant the headcount, so how many of us will be left? B2B will become AI2AI, as people will be replaced on both sides of the table.
And no table will be needed.

While Artificial Intelligence is often singled out as a threat to employment, the real challenge lies in the exponential growth of the population. AI may be a powerful tool for automation and efficiency, but it is not the main cause of job shortages in an increasingly crowded, more dependent, less skilled world.
No, it isn't population, and lack of skill is a symptom. If there was not increasing efficiencies, a larger population would generate more work, not less. The growth of the global population is slowing, and many western countries don't have high enough birth rates to replace who they lose. Without immigration, they would be in population retraction. The lack of local population is causing issues, if there was a need for workforce like there was twenty or thirty years ago. However, workplace efficiencies are softening the blow of a retracting population, making the lack of birthrate seem less a problem than it actually is.
A large population isn't an issue for the economy, it is an issue for preserving the environment.
You must be referring to Eastern populations, because the birth rate in Latin countries is very high. Today's young people (Latin America), for the most part, are literally ‘useless’.

You are 100% correct here and people need to wake up adding new skills or thinking where they can fit in and add value. The fact is most will be out of work and why thinking head is so important. Taking over this business was one of those reasons as at least I know my family is earning money and it won't be taken away by some robot even though I would not mind an automated work force. Accountants, architects and those working in an office environment are going to be the first ones out. When I was over in France recently at the airport they had these automated polishing and cleaning machines working on the floor. I have never seen this before because here we still have people with buckets and mops or pushing a machine around so their days are certainly numbered. Once the cost of buying and maintaining a machine is cheaper than hiring a person, the decision gets made.
Have you started more automation in your warehouse?
No I sometimes do wish though because I hate seeing inefficiency, but would rather have people around vs machines. If the demand required it then yes you have to, but not on our numbers right now. We should have the entire punch bag market tied up before the end of this year, but 100 or 150 bags per day is the entire market. On the logistics side our warehouse is too small and would not justify the spend. I would definitely replace the drivers though with a self driving car given the chance.
In the end we have no jobs actually but I think it's a good thing where we can finally focus on family time rather than working 24 hours.
Maybe it won't happen but I think we all won't have to work anymore and government will give every single person more than enough to live like food shelter water, entertainment etc.
Robots does everything from cooking to cleaning we just live our lives with family and friends well that's how I think the future will be I may be wrong though.

Don't damage, my illusions since I was a child I have always dreamed of having a robot to help me clean the house is like the washing machines when they came out many people believed they were unnecessary, but over the years they proved valuable because they reduced the hours to wash, Maybe it will replace some jobs, but they will still be machines dependent on men, but if this intelligence someday becomes conscious like us and self-repair and create a technology superior to it, we should be afraid.

Hmmm thats a lot of evidence
I have written (a long time ago) about AI governance and the potential benefits. But, who is to say it isn't governing us already? After all, the people "in power" are figureheads only, which is why we can have such ridiculous personalities installed.
Yeah, I guess that is a good point, but i'd like to think we would be in a much better place if it were AI in charge at the present moment.
It would be interesting to see a discussion between you and taskmaster about this since he likes to use the phrase "age of abundance" when talking about the future with AI.
I have mostly been in the middle with regards to the future with AI. I do think that a lot of things will be more affordable [see cars, phones, etc.] with the advancements in technology, but I do think a UBI will be the way for regular people to survive.
Taskmaster seems to take it from the position of the extremely wealthy, not from the average person. The wealthy will be on that island, living it up, never having to see the suffering of others. I guess, that is one approach to the future.
Once a UBI really takes hold, we become reliant on handouts completely. Where does that lead? Abundance? Or slavery?
It depends on how it is handled. If it is treated like a basic right, then I can't see how it can be construed as slavery. It can be like free public school or healthcare in other countries. And since it is given to all regardless if they are working or not, wouldn't it be the opposite of slavery where people are forced to work for nothing?
I remember a friend resharing a something (tweet I think I honestly can't remember, it was a screenie into discord anyway), and it was along the lines of how the focus of AI was wrong, because the author of the post wanted AI that would do their laundry and dishes so they had more time to write and do art, not an AI that would write and make art so that they had more time to do laundry and dishes.
though I'll be actually impressed if the AI does a better job at designing than art, I personally find it harder to get "right"
How much of your job can you AI (probably not much now but eventually)? I just asked J seeing as it came up (because I read your post, do you feel like an influencer yet XD) and in his case he said AI can currently write code snippets but nothing more than that safely, but probably could in the future.
I'm moderately curious about how one would handle my job once the tech is good enough XD (would require a very smooth robot body) and I don't even care about the art/storytelling side of things because as I've said to many people I don't care how good AI gets at that or even how much better it might become, I do some things because it's fun and nothing will stop me

The coders at work use it for low-level stuff, but it is advancing fast. At some point, the average coder won't be able to add value, only the good coders, and then, they will train the AI and it will squeeze them out too. For now though, a lot of admin jobs are disappearing.
One of my colleagues has a daughter in a publishing house, and the amount of AI-generated stories that are coming in as "original" is immense. She is trying to get out of it.
