STEM front end burn increased from 50% to 75%

avatar

Effective immediately, all posts made using STEM tags (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, STEM, STEMGeeks) will only receive 25% of the post rewards if the post does not use https://stemgeeks.net front end.

Curators will always receive full curation rewards and are not affected by this.

STEM has the largest penalty for not using the STEMGeeks front end. We started with a 50% burn of rewards, but we feel 75% is a better fit. While this is a very aggressive stance, there are good reasons for it.

The primary reason for this penalty is to minimize the rewards that go to those on the fringe of the community. A good example is users posting on other platforms about bitcoin and tagging it as #technology as while technically correct, it really doesn't provide content that is STEM in nature.

By reducing rewards of those who add our tags to their post but do not participate in the community, we can reduce the amount of rewards going to those that are not specifically targeting our community.

The original vision of STEM was rewards those creating and engaging with STEM topics. Rewarding content that has no relationship to STEM topics with tokens is counter productive to our mission.

Other communities who have implemented these same penalties typically use 10-20% penatlies, and while this is a good strategy, we feel a more aggressive stance is more in line with our goals.

This change is already in place and you will notice a significant reduction in author rewards when using STEM tags without using our front end.

While we are happy with this change, and feel it is in our best interest, we are always open to feedback if you want to join us on our Discord Server you are welcome to come discuss it.

Pretty big change.

I support this.

Massive change, 50% less rewards.

It's an experiment ultimately. I feel it is best for our community and token, as I want to ensure community members get the majority of the rewards.

A big factor is STEM is not a popular topic on Hive, and I want to minimize the amount of tokens created until there are more viable canidates to receive them.

I appreciate and respect your and everyone else's opinion on it.

You guys have always been consistently open about your position on Hive. I support the move and will continue to HODL.

Fair enough.
And I think using tags only may not help the cause so far it is not used as a frontend.

I honestly have no problems with people using the tags regardless if they use the front end. The main idea is to laser focus rewards to those who are really part of the community and avoid hemorrhaging rewards to posts that may or may not be related.

Yeah but I feel like presence and engagement on the website itself is valuable for project itself.

For sure, and there are SEO benefits to it as well which helps get more traffic for these topics. In the end, it's mostly about keeping the rewards in the hands who deserve it most.

Makes sense to me. Good luck with that! We need to do what we can to combat tag abuse.

This is a good change, though aggressive if the topic is associated solely with STEM topic then why not use the stemgeeks interface for posting the content and earn more STEM tokens. cheers

A very brave move and very welcome. Hopefully this will stamp our the tag abuse and massively increase users on your front end.

Really happy to see Stemgeeks still being worked on :-)

Would it be possible to remove the penalty when the post is posted in the stemgeeks community also? Using multiple frontends for every community is not very user-friendly.

Not really, the Hive Community is different. I have it there so if Hive gets native tokens, I can migrate off Hive Engine.

I will be a lot more enthusiastic about this when the front-end is better (I wrote a post proposing some ideas around that) but bottom line, I am in favour :)

Communities are the bedrock that Hive will grow upon, if it grows at all.

The front end works fine and serves it's purpose. It isn't bad just not flashy. The community is a tiny niche on a small blockchain, can't justify spending $20K+ on a website under those conditions.

It's your community so I understand that you are happy where it is at ...

The community is a tiny niche on a small blockchain,

IMO it could be as big or bigger than the LEO community

can't justify spending $20K+ on a website under those conditions.

As I mentioned elsewhere, fiat $ doesn't have to be part of it

🤷‍♂️ but it is your community, your call

Doubtful, Leo is a common interest of everyone here where STEM is only a small subset of the community.

Fiat or not it still has a USD value

Once there is an effective front-end, it isn't relying on carving out a percentage of the Hive community but stands on its own merits AND derives benefits from the Hive association.

My STEAM-topic website gets 30,000 visitors a month mainly from search because I have been posting here instead of on my actual blogs. One Python article of mine on a popular python community has had more than my entire site.

Fiat or not it still has a USD value

Sure, and I get that the gains are not a huge motivator for you either.

The front end works and compared to others I have never experienced a problem with it. If it’s not broken, I don’t see a need for enhancements above what’s available. STEM is a small community.

Aside from that it would be nice if the STEM Geeks front end greeted me by name and provided me with weather reports on regions of the Earth I will never visit. If it could sing me old Spanish songs while I read the articles that would be nice too.

Thank you!

Your point are valid and make sense. However, if everyone pushes their own frontend, sooner or later it will be very painful to follow all the communities one may be interested in. There is a reason I for example use Ecency 95% of the time.

That’s true too. I can not have so many accounts and use so many front ends. It just takes too long. I have deliberately cut down on my use of alts and front ends for this reason. I might just cut one more out of my curation efforts in the future. It won’t be StemGeeks though fortunately.

I get the point but do you follow everything On reddit?
Do you follow everything On YouTube?

Hive is getting too big to just follow, gotta make choices imo.

I don't want o follow everything, but if all the communities I follow push their own frontend, that's gonna be problematic for me (I know its a my problem). I was happy when I found Ecency and I thought that I can comment, post and follow people in different communities from the same place. Now as it goes I have to visit all of them separately, which is really inconvenient. The people who manage the communities have the right to do so as they please, I'm just pointing out that this decision may cost them followers.

I do understand this action. Being a CTPTalk member keeping the Tag relevant and free from abuse is challenging and I am sure LeoFinance has similar challenges.
Since it has been announced it is too late, but I think this is a huge mistake.
Many excellent Hive Members use the PeakD front end because it is feature-rich. A person could load up their articles and schedule their publication automatically, many people use these features.
Looking at the StemGeeks front end it is very basic lacking most of the features of the PeakD frontend. If StemGeeks frontend was comparable I could understand the aggressive burn rate, but as it stands it is not even close.
