Wow. Relevancy. A massive poignant piece and I think you hit the nail on the head about people needing to matter, to feel what they do matters and the need to feel our work has impact on others in our community.

I can understand how this could be supplanted by online relevance. A sad replacement for the rewards of human interaction in a meaningful way.

I think I need to go do some self improving soul searching.

While I have considered relevancy before, until relatively recently, I hadn't connected it as clearly in my head with our online behavior. This has ramifications in many of the aspects of society that has come to the fore in recent years, including things like outrage, addiction and identity politics.
