The Scalability Of Hive Engagement || What Happens If More And More Users Join?

The Hive blockchain is a valuable piece of technology. That much is clear to me, and probably to many others who are consistently using the platform and all its opportunities. From blogging, to engaging, to learning, to making friends. Even just fiddling with everything the second layer Hive Engine has to offer. We are all finding our value one way or another.

The question now is if this will keep on going forever? With the current amount of users there is a certain consensus of what Hive is for and what is deemed "abuse". This abuse is easily managed by different groups that have taken this upon themselves, but also by the individual users who feel responsible to govern the system in a decentralized manner. Whether it be through votes, downvotes, or just commenting on things.

This is all manageable now, but what happens if the amount of users increases? Will the limitation of abusive behavior be maintained, or will chaos ensue? Right now we have people on Hive who are not thinking in the mainstream sense. Those that are thinking mainstream are still on the mainstream platform. But if Hive goes where it is intended to go it can enter the mainstream spotlight itself, replacing its centralized competitors in the process. But this means that all mainstream users come along with that newfound fame.

All troubles of mainstream media will find its way to Hive. People fighting over silly things. Hate speech. Baby mama drama, and all that other stuff that we don't like to see. Will that ruin the experience of Hive as we currently know it? Or will it simply be a new era that we have to get used to. One could argue that that's the point of Hive anyway. Anybody should be able to do and say what they want. Any controversial group or topic should be able to have a community where people are allowed to discuss freely within that group or about that topic.

This can all work assuming that people abide by the rules of communities. If people from PETA for example started flooding a Hive community for people who love to grill and eat meat, that could be a problem. Sure, with the current scale of things, we can mute and drown out the abusers. But what if the whole world is on Hive. Will moderators be able to handle that. Will the parameters of the blockchain be sufficient.

I don't really know the answer to the question, but the way I've seen issues resolved in the Hive community as a whole, I have high hopes that in due time we will have a solution ready.

These are valid points you’ve made and it got me thinking too.
I’m basically new here and hardly knows anything that’s going on but I’m also paying attention. There’s something great and organic about Hive, I hope it doesn’t lose that touch.
I’m hopeful for a solution too.

That's a good word to describe it: organic.
Keep looking around, interacting and creating content consistently, and you will be part of that solution.

I think it just depends on what people are willing to do. I think the witnesses will be fine so it will be the users. It's hard to define what is abuse as it could mean a lot of things and I guess it would mean more people would have to be careful on what they do.

The definition of abuse is definitely relative.
What will also play a role is that everyone understand that Hive is a platform that is not intended to censor people. People should be able to be politically incorrect in a designated Community for that exact purpose.

Sadly, you get bad actors in every community. It's just part of life and they are never going to go away. As you say, it's down to the community as a whole to ensure the impact these people have is kept to a minimum.

Jup, it's definitely up to the community, but also the system that is already in place: the blockchain. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I think 2017 was a lot like that and we solved a lot of the problems but became much easier as the price of hive went down. I’d like to think we have a much stronger core now that would work to make any kind of attacks on others not welcome. But it could get really complicated

I don’t think we are meant to be as big as Facebook. I do think we can and should hit a few million active users though. And I think we can manage that.

I don’t think we are meant to be as big as Facebook.

With the average mentality on mainstream social media, we're probably not going reach that much user, I agree. But a massive rush of users is theoretically possible. All it takes is some celeb endorsements for example.
