Netflix - How to Lose Millions of Subscribers 101

Netflix has been raising prices and giving us less. It's time to cancel.

Netflix is making some weird business moves.

Netflix is one of the largest tv and movie streaming platforms in the world. Just recently they reported their first ever loss in subscribers since 2011. They reported a loss of over 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2022, and lost $50 billion in market cap. Netflix stock is now the worst performing stock of the year recording 62% losses. Ouch.

It looks like people are starting to wake up to the fact that Netflix has done nothing but continuously raise prices without adding any value to the service. I remember a couple years ago paying like $8 per month, and now prices are as high as $20 per month if you want to be able to use the service on more than one device. If you wanna actually take advantage of your tv that has a higher resolution that 480p, you're gunna have to cough up some more money. Have multiple people in your house that wanna watch at the same time? Same thing. You're gunna need the premium package.

Don't worry though, you get their shitty mobile games platform included at no additional cost!

I dunno about you, but I'm able to watch most things I want without paying for Netflix. I canceled my subscription a few months ago and have not regretted it at all. If I can access almost anything I want to watch with cheaper and even free alternatives, where is the value? Literally the only reason I even have access to it is I have a friend's login that I've been using every now and then. I imagine that's about to end too.

The most recent update came with the announcement of commercials and extra fees for sharing accounts. The most popular way to get a subscription to Netflix has always been to borrow someone's login. Or hop on the ole' eBay and buy a shared login instead of paying monthly. They're about to start cracking down on this and charging fees for people sharing accounts. I assume they will do this by checking which IP addresses are accessing which accounts. Bye bye free Netflix courtesy of friends. lol

The news headlines make it sound like they're adding commercials to all plans. That's not the case (at least I don't think so) yet, as they stated they are exploring a lower tier package that is ad-supported. While there's nothing wrong with that, you'd think they would be looking for ways to add value to the existing subscribers' plans instead of announcing an account sharing crack down. I'm no business expert, but I'd be willing to bet lowering prices by even $1 per month would help retain a lot of customers.

These announcements are being met with a lot of unhappy customers. They're literally shooting themselves in the foot with a rocket launcher. Like when you're bored in a video game and want to respawn or start over. Just throw a grenade or shoot a rocket at your feet. Unfortunately for them, there's no respawning and they just have to eat the losses.

This is pushing more and more people to cancel their subscriptions and look for alternatives. Creating pirates! lol. While I don't agree with piracy of movies and tv shows, I've done my fair share because everyone does. This very much encourages people to find other ways to consume the content without paying a subscription fee.

I think part of their problem is that they started strong with all kinds of content. But, then networks and studios started their own channels and removing their movies and shows from Netflix. Now you have to subscribe to multiple services to watch what was once available on Netflix.

At the beginning, I was happy to pay for streaming services like Netflix instead of pirating because it made my life easier.

Everything was there in the one place and I felt I wasn't getting ripped off.

But now the streaming service landscape is so fractured (and don't even get me started on sport), it's not easy and I'm certainly getting ripped off.

So I'm out again and have no sympathy.

They've done this to themselves.

Many people can watch a lot of things on Netflix for free. That's why it's normal to have a decrease in subscriptions. I think Netflix should do something more innovative.

That's my point. Where is the value in paying $20/month when I can watch most of it free. Plus if I share my login, it's another $3. Hell no.

They got greedy and overplayed their hand. I didn't know they were considering commercials. If it comes down to that, I'll most likely jump ship immediatly.

Yep, I guess whoever is in charge of pricing felt like they could just keep going up with no actual value being added.

One of the reasons why Netflix was good was because of the password sharing and I think they even promoted it to people. Was the limit 4 people? Either way, I just don't see these people wanting to pay more when the value has dropped.

Another thing to consider is the price. Just compare the price of Netflix and how it changed over time. There are so many price hikes and it's kind of crazy how often they hiked prices without providing that much extra value.

Yeah that was the best thing about Netflix honestly. People should cancel and use alternatives to really punch em in the gut.
